They waited forever to get it up and running last year if I recall. Also, they had already increased the price of tickets before they even announced who was playing, which is absolute BS.

I thought the evnt was pretty good, Morillo, tanglia, oakenfold, is not a bad line-up, it was just bad orginization. I think the event sold out??? |
I read the reviews last year, they were not good. For one, the sound was all fucked up on the main stage and Timo Maas hardly got to spin as a result. Also, it was overpriced for the amount of time it lasted.

I said let me give them a break, since it was their 1st time in NY, but I still supported it because I think NYC deserves a big EDM concert on par with Miami and Europe, we have the venues (Pacha, spirit, crobar, cielo, sully room, avalon, etc.) and central park or Randalls Island, I thought it would eventually evolve into a mini-WMC, ultra always does a bad job with sound, in miami as well

the main reason for ultra not being as successful in other areas outside of Miami's WMC, is that each city has its own rules and regulations when it comes to outdoor events. It's less enforced down in miami because the revenue their economy generates from this week (as well as other weekly events - jazz fest, culinary week, etc). Miami is able to tax businesses on almost every front during weeks of these events. Unlike New York who already has a thriving economy, we are inhibited by laws which would prevent these outdoor festivals from popping up.
This includes the sound issue. Manhattan is a highly populated island, I don't think it would fair well with loud music where as in miami there is space and ocean front to steal some of that buffer zone. Sound overall can be engineered to great lengths, that's not the issue, it's the zoning, laws, and rules of a city that restricts the popularity of these events. And besides, many go nude on south beach....won't happen here in nyc.

Also the city of miami/miami beach realize the tourist dollars that these events bring in, where as in NYC they already have tourism and nightclubs and the scene around it (us) has been looked down on, case in point is the "caberet" laws
As far as the sound goes, I meant ultra as the producer tends to have problems with set-up. They have produced many events but still come off as amateurs at time
Overall Ultra NY was still pretty good last year, and deserved a second try
