Smiley DJ Review: Steve Lawler @ 4th and B

And so begins my weekend with lawler:

drew, julie and i get to san diego just before 11 and get in pretty quickly. the place is already getting full and the opening dj is laying down some nice tracks. the people all around me seemed to totally dig his sound b/c lots of peeps were dancing.

then sean miller gets up and i have to say, sets lawler up nicely. he as well layed down some nice tracks with some very funky beats.

but of course i'm waiting for lawler and i was not disappointed. his set was different than when i saw him in atlanta, not quite as dark and deep and dirty but i think he was saving that for tonight at avalon. i stayed down front mostly with julie but ran into way too many handsey guys and that got way too irritating. dancing should not be a contact sport unless invited and i played defense for most of the evening. i mean some guy even tried to wash me! it got so bad that at 3:35 i looked at drew and i said you ready? so we split right before the end. i usually don't get that kind of hassle at 4th and B but last night must have brought out the penis dancers in full force.

but other than that i had a great time. saw desiree, serch54(so nice meeting you and man you looked so happy every time i saw you) and liverpoolken. those were the only SDTA's i saw and then i saw several regular san diegians that i normally see while in town. so great to party with them again. so crazy, this guy comes up to me and says, "were you at the hollywood canteen about a month ago" and i'm like yeah and he said i saw you there. how crazy small this world and scene is.

so anyways, the ride home was from hell, not only was i exhausted and a little tipsey but we were in search of a bathroom for julie which we did not find until like the 5th place. how does every place in san diego not have a bathroom? then they decide to close the 5 around irvine and send us some crazy ass way around. then i somehow miss the 5 and get on the 101 around downtown and then they decide to close the 101 so we get on the 10 heading the wrong way!!!!! i was in traffic hell and poor julie and drew got to see the grouchy sarah. but by the end we were all laughing b/c if it was going to happen traffic wise it happened to us and all at 6 am on a saturday!!! that's LA for ya. so i crawled into bed at 7 am and crashed.

but anyways..................... i EXPECT some dark, deep, dirty, sexy house tonight from lawler and i have a sneaky suspicion we are gonna get it. i hope they totally do up avalon and make it crazy in there and i can't wait to party with the whole darkside (wait are we using that anymore ) crew! see you tonight.

Lawler didn't play deep & dark.

I'll take that as he sucked for my tastes. :-p

BTW, he hasn't been playing Deep & Dark for the most part for awhile now. I would go in tonight not expecting it are chances are you will be disappointed. Not saying you won't get it, but rather get it as a surprise than be let down when you don't hear it.

I had a helluva good time last night. Lawler definitely laid down some heavier stuff near the end, and i was really stoked off the whole set. One of the longer ones we've gotten at Love so far. Theres a remix of a track that he played that's also in the may Hernan Cattaneo promo(near the end), and when he dropped that.. hooooly crap! i gotta find a track ID for that

I saw a lot of happy faces in general. That was a much needed outing for me tho goOd TimES

I thought it was fun and I really enjoyed the evening, but honestly, I was kinda dissapointed with the set...I felt as though what Lawler was spinning from 3-4 he should have been starting with or at least playing a little earlier on. He was set up very nicely and the crowed was hyped by the time he came on. I just felt he could have kept people on the floor longer with a little more energy in the early part of his set. When he began the floor was packed, but when he finished there were probably 20-50 people left in the club and he was throwin out bangers...seemed to me he shoulda been throwin it down earlier to keep the SD'ans attention a little longer...

wasn't at avalon though, had a cousin's wedding, but sounded like a blast!
