Pure Trance. 1988.
Like trance music itself....the music and the imagery is insisting on a persistence of state....Bill and Jimmy had always wanted to make a "road movie"..a traveling movie, a movie consisting of nothing but driving, all day, from sunset to sundown, done in real time (or close to it), as when one goes on a roadtrip, that is often all one does all day long....is just keep driving...and driving...and driving...
The White Room movie is an extension of this mood, this ambience, this tranquil state. Alone to yourself, nothing to say, nothing to think....just driving...endlessly....in a state of trane.
Drummond and Cauty are shown leaving Trancentral, and driving through London, then driving through mainly desert country. Some memorable scenes include the JAMs-mobile covered in white dustwash, with the windscreen wipers clearing a space, Drummond combing his hair before sauntering down the road as if he was a traffic cop...Finally the wheels of the JAMs-mobile stop in a snow drift, and the KLF climb upwards through the snow towards a huge radar dish, wherein they find the White Room.
A video for the pure trance What Time Is Love is sometimes shown on MTV. It consists of unedited footage from Sierra Nevada. Two shots of sheep in a field bookended a 5 minute shot of the JAMs-mobile gradually driving a couple of miles towards the camera across a barren plain. It's extremely tedious, and getting MTV to show this can be viewed as a prank....
Nevertheless, for the purposes of the mood it conveyed, and the trance music it was introducing to the world at the time, for its purity and simplicity, this may very well be the best video ever made.

The video is trance. |
I get your point, but I still find it dull. You can achieve this concept while having something a little more interesting than a bunch of sheep for five minutes. Something like this.

WTIL is total anti-video: no stupid cheap visuals trying to visualise E or anything daft like that. Just some sheep and a road. It's mesmirising. |
But then, so is staring at a wall for five minutes. And just as interesting too! If you're going to have a video like that, then why bother have a video at all?

where as I can't remember any defining image from the Papua video and I've seen it sixteen thousand times. |
Maybe that was the point of it?

I thought the music and the video was boring. Although I do agree that this video you posted is a good example of pure trance. On a more subjective note I'm more of a non-repetitive uplifting type of guy. For example what I'm about to introduce is not pure trance but rather an uplifting trance number from 1994:

Now this is a better example of a video which fits the overall theme of the music, in this case, pure trance music. Nice find.

Yup.
An anti-video. When every video has something in it....howabout one that has nothing.
Yet is nothing still something? It's like that painting of a pipe that says "This is not a pipe".
There are levels of deepness here that you have yet to explore....man.
