I just moved the studio into my new house. The hardware now resides in an unfinished basement. The sound quality in a basement is obviously not ideal... to say the least. I wanted to get some ideas on relatively inexpensive means for soundproofing this space.

Sound proofing does not = sound treating.

Acoustic foam does not actually sound proof your room because it is porous. Therefore you can actually cover every wall with auralex foam and your neighbor will still hear everything.

Sound proofing would involve putting some kind of barrier material on your walls like sheet block.

Which is it? Treatment? Sound Proofing?

I didn't make this thread, but if you could give me any ideas on cheap soundproofing i would love it.

I'd like to stop sound from getting into the room though, not out so much. (I live in a 2 bedroom house, and my parents are loud as fuck, so I have trouble concentrating on music, and anything else.)

I can already turn the volume up fairly loud without much sound escaping to the neighbors because it is in the basement. The space I'm in doesn't sound great to me because of the concrete walls. I imagine I'm looking for decent sound treatment solution. I was looking into the foam. Would that be the best solution for giving me a better sound in this space?

If you want to isolate your room you buy a few rolls of sheet block and staple it all over the walls, ceilling and underneath the carpet. This will however make your room sound really weird.

Adam you should probably buy a roominator kit or something. A number of foam panels and bass traps in the corners to stop all the horrid reflections.

If you live in the US the shipping isnt so bad but if you live in Europe they can get crazy expensive and take ages to arrive. Apparently they work really fucking well though.

what you could do is lay some sort of foam on to the wall that separates you from your parents, follow up with sheetrock, and a layer of paint. thats the basic approach, there are more detailed means of the same thing but i believe you'd need more space in between (not good for small rooms). but jesus christ, all i have is traffic noise on the other side...

As has been posted before, there is a world of difference between treating a room and soundproofing (actaully a more accurate term is sound reduction, as total isolation is both very expensive and hard to do).

Can you post pics &measurements of your space, along with wall, fllor and ceilng construction details? From that I can model your space for you and give you come pracical advice routed in hard data as opposed to marketing and blind application of treatment which could make your room worse!

Finally what make and model of speakers do you have, the has a bearing on placement.

If you have time take a look at my studio buildout thread for a look at what several hundred hours and a few thousand dollars can do to a basement.

I bought Auralex bass traps and high frequency traps...and it made a huge difference.
If your room is not treated you can't do anything. Producing in an untreated room is like painting with sunglasses.

put curtains up around the walls and maybe bring a nice big rug to put on the floor. that sould kill some reverb issues..

nope, rungs and curtains only cut HF reflection, and even then not so much..

Cetainly won't prevent sound passing through and out into the outside...

Mass & Isolation are the two ways to prevent sound travelling outside your room. Foam, and objects inside the room are treatment to improve the sound of your mix.
