Know the feeling, I come from logic 5.5 and compared to cubase sx3, sx plugins sound really.. well bad..
I have some nice free plugins from http://www.kjaerhusaudio.com/classic-series.php they all have a nice warm sound. They also are good on cpu.

that free filter was a beauty, just what I've been missing in my little vst arsenal
the moogfilters frickin rock! (almost creamed my pants! )

Free, and probably the best filterbank EVER! (apart from it's bigger brother, the Tone2 FilterBank 2)
Try the 6 pole Moog filter on your bass sounds and try not to cream your pants
Tried it and it sounds good indeed, but automation doesn't seem to work in sx3, which is really a shame.
