Then start with "Hello, World." That one may be just as useless, but at least it's endlessly entertaining.
Seriously though, I recognize the difficulty in creating a program of any difficulty above the first year level. But that doesn't mean that the hardest work of any programmer can't create something that I have no use for. Just because he's starting out doesn't mean he should be babied and cooed over. If it weren't for criticism, nothing in the world would get better. So While I'm encouraging him to make programs that are more useful (like that loopmangler plugin--in fact, I could think of some ways it might be made better, but maybe later), you're telling him inutile programs are perfectly acceptable, and essentially to keep on making pointless garbage. Who's being more useful to him in the long run?
And yes, when he makes a program as big as Ableton, I will appreciate that. But he's not doing that yet.
So put that bleeding heart away, and save it for someone who actually has ill-will towards someone.
