Can anybody give me some suggestions on good reference monitors? This will be my first pair, so i don't really know where to begin. I will be using them for production (trance and breakbeat mainly). I have been thinking about mackie hr824s but i really don't know. Any help would be much appreciated.

Well the mackie ones are a bit overkill if its just somthing ur looking to start off with m8.

Id say KRK rokit rp5 or rp6's or somthing equivalent. I have tested the Behringer 2030 "truth" series monitors and they are really good for their price range. You can pick up a 6" driver pair for around £100. You can try alesis too, the new active series but tbh id go krk over alesis.

Basically:

If you have the money to spend, get KRK, if you are just starting out this will do fine and last you a long time.

If you would like good but reasonably cheap monitors, try the behringer series.

You must mention what price range of monitors you can afford. I have the 824s and I'm very happy with them, before I had the KRK Rokit 8 and didn't like them much. The KRK V8 v2 is a good monitor too, if you can’t afford these then Event TR8 is a good one at half the price. In monitors you pretty much get what you pay for.

See if there is a Guitar Center or someplace simular that you could try before you buy. Studio monitors can be a very personal thing. I spent about 2 hours at Guitar Center testing out different pairs. Bring some tracks that you know well, and some recordings from other types of music. After all the testing I went with a pair of Dynaudios. Than I ended up returning them, not becasue I didn't like them but because I wanted CDJ's instead and I decided I wanted to do my system diferently ( 3 way active with subs, full, and a tweeter array )

The Mackie monitors are really sweet. If I could I afford them I would be all over the HR824's, they sound so damn good. I have never heard the smaller HR624's but I would assume they are solid simply based on the HR824.

If you can you should really try to at least go out and hear a few pairs. When they have them set up in the big room at a Guitar center or whatever, it is not the ideal listening enviornment but it is better than nothing at all. Just keep in mind they will likly sound different once they are in your room.

I like the hr626's and would recommend them as well as the hr824's Tannoy makes some nicer monitors as does Event.
