alright... i dunno if this has been asked.... prolly has... but i wasn't around to view it... so i'm asking...

is it okay to mix the same song in a set if they are different mixes?

i do this a lot... mainly because i love the songs too much... or because i can't find anything else to mix into... on the last mix i made i mixed two versions of vincent de moor - fly away (the generation x mix and the don diablo mix), not together... there was 3 songs inbetween... but then on the mix i did tonight... i mixed 2 different versions of 2 different songs... i dunno if that made sense... here... the tracklist says it all...

mdm - mash it up (matt darey's hard on mix)
dumonde vs lange - memory (original mix)
marc aurel - running (dumonde mix)
talla 2xlc - world in my eyes (cosmic gate mix)

it was only 45 minutes... but blah... my friends said they loved it... but they were all on x... and i dunno... i didn't mind doing it... but now that i look back on it... if i ever did that in a club... someone might say something... you know what... nevermind... i'll do it at house parties and not at clubs (if i ever get a chance... ha!) so i answered my own question... but yeah... i still wanna know what you all think of doing this?

Well.. I'd say it's generally not advisable. Some big name DJs have done it in their sets and they made it sound good, though, so I think the bottom line is that if the crowd really loves it and all, then just let your feelings guide your track selection..

i always thought it was generally considered as a no-no to play different remixes of the same track in a set and a no-no to play different tracks either produced or remixed by the same producer back-to-back. however digweed has done both of these (two different mixes back-to-back of morel - true (the ****** is you) on bedrock vol. 1 and a bunch of satoshi tomiie productions and remixes on global underground 19 disc 1). i consider it not the best thing. for one you only have so much time in your set that i think it's good to get some diversity in there and show your crowd what you're made of. also my djing sensei told me playing tracks by the same producer is kinda like cheating cuz the songs are probably gonna follow a similar structure. feedback from others please.

well the way i see it, you shouldnt be djing to please the critics but the please the audience... gain, so what if you play 3 tracks by the same producer one after another?

Well I know nothing about DJing, but if you want a clubbers opinion, I think it's a good idea, if done well.

When it's the next morning, I'm more likely to remember a DJ if he played a top tune more than once, cos it sticks in my head.


I went to the Godskitchen Carnival on Sunday night, and Ferry Corsten - Punk is still ringing in my head. That night was full of top DJs. Armin, Anne Savage, Jules, Ferry, Lashes, Signum, everyone. I think Ferry Corsten - Punk was played THREE times and the crowd loved it every time. The place was packed to the brim until the end and THAT is the very tune everyone remembers.

So, if you pull it off well, then yeah I think it's a good idea. Afterall, what do you want to do, impress your boss or the critics, or impress the crowd?

"Win the crowd and you will win your freedom". Lol I stole that from the movie Gladiator but it's true, the crowd dictates what goes on, because they bring in the money. Your boss or whoever matters cannot survive without the crowd. He can't remove you if you're really popular, in fact you're in control of him when you're popular. He wants you, not the other way round.


Sorry I'm getting all philosophical now! I'll shut up.

I remember Oakie himself spun 2 versions of the same song (New Order- Someone Like You) early in his NEC Crasher set, but hardly anyone noticed anything; I myself only realised this when I took a look at the tracklist afterwards. I didn't think the crowd wanted that track repeated SO badly; I think what guided him to make his decision to spin the same song twice was feeling. Maybe that's the only rule DJs should abide by.. "spin with your heart, nothing else matters".

Darn, tell me that last sentence looks cheesy.

Actually mixing for example three different versions of one tune could sound pretty cool if you didn't play the whole 8 minutes of each track (the last one being complete, though).

i don't think its a big issue to spin tracks that are produced by the same producer back to back. doing 2 remixes of the same track might be a little messy but if the crowd likes it, its no problem either. its all about putting the best dance music for the people on the floor. not about having strict guidelines about what and what not to spin. i think tiesto once said, "spin the tracks you like, but try to please the crowd at the same time." or something close to that.
