Sad Bring Back John-Paul II

23rd August:

quote:
Pope Benedict XVI has sacked his chief astronomer after a series of public clashes over the theory of evolution.

He has removed Father George Coyne from his position as director of the Vatican Observatory after the American Jesuit priest repeatedly contradicted the Holy See's endorsement of "intelligent design" theory, which essentially backs the "Adam and Eve" theory of creation.

28th August:

quote:
Adolf Hitler and Russian leader Stalin were possessed by the Devil, the Vatican's chief exorcist has claimed. Father Gabriele Amorth who is Pope Benedict XVI's 'caster out of demons' made his comments during an interview with Vatican Radio.

Father Amorth said: "Of course the Devil exists and he can not only possess a single person but also groups and entire populations.

"I am convinced that the Nazis were all possessed. All you have to do is think about what Hitler - and Stalin did. Almost certainly they were possessed by the Devil. You can tell by their behaviour and their actions, from the horrors they committed and the atrocities that were committed on their orders. That's why we need to defend society from demons."

8th September:

quote:
Pope Benedict lashed out Friday at Canada for allowing same sex marriage and abortion, saying the policies resulted from Catholic politicians ignoring the values of their religion.

"In the name of tolerance, your country has had to endure the folly of the redefinition of spouse," the Pope told a group of bishops from Ontario. "In the name of freedom of choice, it is confronted with the daily destruction of unborn children."

10 September:

quote:
Pope Benedict XVI on Sunday warned modern societies not to let faith in science and technology make them deaf to God's message, and suggested that Asia and Africa could teach the wealthier West something about faith.

Western societies are losing their souls to scientific rationality and frightening believers in the developing world who still fear God, Pope Benedict told an open-air mass in Germany on Sunday.

Benedict, on the second day of a visit to his native Bavaria, said that spreading the word of Jesus Christ was more important than all the emergency and development aid that rich churches like that in Germany gave to poor countries.

I know JP2 wasn't always a beacon of enlightenment either, but I don't think he came up with as much quackery in his entire reign as pope Benny has in the past 3 weeks. What do Catholics make of all this?

Yeah I am what you'd call a Catholic who really isn't a Catholic but is because his parents, esp his mom, makes him go to Church. Anyways, I am not happy with this new pope and just as George W. Bush has done with our country, the Pope is regressing the church back 50+ years, and instead of progress, he's going back to the days where the Church went after people they thought were witches or heretics...basically anyone who wasn't Catholic or Christian. What next...mass in latin again? Burning people at the stake? I don't see what is wrong with believing in evolution and believing in God, and I had always thought that the Church after Vatican II was getting more involved with science and I remember Pope John Paul II saying that there is no problem with believing in Evolution. The Church cannot seriously be jumping on the Intelligent Design bandwagon...I thought that debate was fading away...

For the position of the Pope being the mouthpiece of God, he sure changes his mind a lot.

Exactly, I don't think the Pope is the mouth-piece of God but the mouth-piece for the Church, no different than a politician really...

And he just keeps them coming.

12th September:

quote:
Using the words, "jihad" and "holy war", the Pope quoted criticisms of the prophet Mohammed by a 14th century Byzantine Christian emperor, Manuel II, during a debate with a learned Persian.

"Show me just what Mohammed brought that was new, and there you will find things only evil and inhuman, such as his command to spread by the sword the faith he preached," Benedict quoted the emperor as saying.

Just doing his bit for Islamo-Christian relations I guess.

Most of us RCs know the difference between our religion and the Vatican. That said, the Vatican would claim that due to Jesus saying to Peter "whatever you hold true on earth I will hold true in heaven" makes the pope capable of creating devine law. Personally, I think it's safe to say that this was an addition to the gospel meant to solidify the church's authority as opposed to something that was actually spoken by Jesus as allowing a human to obligate God to do anything would stand in stark contradiction to much of Jesus' ministry which often highlighted that God was beyond the understanding of man and that which even the most enlightened man would do is not always consistant with God's will.

the current pope sucks.

add to the above comments:

his insulation permits unwise wordchoices or insensititve quotes such as the quoting of the previous pope (see the islam comments)

his refusal to issue an apology for his quote. he only apologizes for the results of furor, which nbow has resulted in attacks on christians and churches. he's not a man and not worthy of being a leader of the largest religous organization on earth.

i still think its funny though- the pope was talking about islam and violence and their historical relationship, and to protest this the muslims burn down churches.
