POLL: Should the Internet be policed by a regulatory body?
I was home for lunch and was watching CityLine on CityTV.
They were discussing the shooter who killed one woman and injured like 19 other ppl (some who are in critical conditions I think still) at a Montreal college yesterday.
They had a phone-in poll going on about whether viewers and callers thought that the Internet in fact should be or needed to be policed by a regulatory body, and that freedom of expression on the Internet has been allowed to go too far.
Almost all the callers I heard in the last 20 min of the show stated that they felt that things on the Net absolutely needed to be policed and regulated!
This guy has a Website it has been revealed that was very disturbing and sick, and that it stated his intentions to do something of this sort.
Anyways, what do yall think, and I'm really interested to know how the TA population feels about the idea of our Internet being regulated and policed.
I dont think that it should, at first thought. But I believe Id need to reflect on this more to form a solid opinion on the matter.
DISCUSS.

So uhhh Internet caused the shootings? Well, at least we're done with blaming GTA now.
The day Internet becomes regulated by some uptight governmental body is the day I stop using it.

We mouth belief in freedom of speech and expression, but really, most of us just want security and if curbing some 'freedoms' and 'rights' mean more security, I think a lot of us would buy it.

Isnt China's? FACK - and look what they cant access and that their governemnt controls controls they can and cant see
And I think the idea was also that if somehow the net was policed, they would have found out about his site and somehow stopped this (yea right)
or that having a site about this encourages others, so therefore on that grounds it should be stopped...
they also said things on the net should be regulated bc of hte rampant child pron shit that exists on the net for all to see and access, and it only fuels child porn lovers (who are bad ppl)

That's as silly as saying if the streets are policed (which they are) that it would stop the sale of illegal drugs on the streets (which it doesn't).

Hmmm...
Well I think if it'll ensure the safety of our children (i.e. cutting down on the kiddy porn and luring children by sexual predators) then yes...
But the whole "big brother" is watching you online kind of deal...that's kind of iffy for me...
I guess it's a trade-off b/t safety and privacy...
Still undecided...

Before any serious debate on this issue can be had, we need a really good definition of what "policing the Internet" actually means. Child pornography is already illegal - putting it on the Internet does not make it legal, and people who share child pornography online are already hunted by government agencies, and when caught, prosecuted. So what would "policing the Internet" change?

Best way to combat child predators are to educate kids about dangers of internet and talking to strangers online.
Kiddy porn... Well, you can't stop that but there is already a policing organ devouted to tracking down child porn. But like all criminal activities, you can't stop all of it.
Because of actions of few bad ppl, the whole society shouldn't be punished.
