Three gunmen have killed at least seven Israelis and wounded six after ambushing their vehicles from a hillside near the Israeli-Lebanon border.
Police believe the assailants came from Lebanon but the Israeli military said there was no indication of infiltration across the northern border.
Security forces responded immediately, engaging in a gun battle the assailants in the hills surrounding Kibbutz Metsuba, a communal farm.
Two of the gunmen were killed while the third continued to shoot on the road.
A truck driver, two passengers in a second car and a person in a third vehicle were killed in the attack, police sources said. Rescue officials said six people had been wounded, two moderately and four lightly.
Residents of the kibbutz fled into underground bomb shelters while passengers in vehicles sought cover where they could.
In an apparent attempt to dissociate Lebanon from the attack, the TV station of Hezbollah guerrillas in Lebanon suggested that Palestinian guerrillas were behind the attack. There was no immediate comment from Hezbollah.
Lebanese security officials said it appeared the attack came from within Israeli territory and not from Lebanon.
A witness telephoned Israeli radio from under a bridge where he was hiding while the gun battle ensued. He said the shooting on the road between Shlomi and Metsuba originated from a ridge overlooking the road.
Police, large numbers of soldiers and a helicopter responded immediately to the attack, the witness said.
