Might sound like a bit of a silly question, but how do you guys go about buying your music?

Like, say you log on to Beatport/Trackitdown/wherever, do you start by looking at a particular genre first, or maybe an artist or a label?

I understand there is tons of shite that you have to weed through to find those few tracks worthy of actually being played, I'm just in a curious mood today...

Will sound unoriginal but I look at newest tracklists of artists I like so... A house artists playlist, then search the tracks on beatport even if I recognize the artist or track or do not. Then I'll browse by the names associated w/ the artists like..the remixers and labels.

I also look on beatport everyday so I listen to all the featured tracks just out of curiosity.

Good question. One thing leads to another for me. Sometimes I'm searching and I know what I am searching for. But what I do mostly, to find really different stuff...is find artists and labels I like, look at their remixes. Listen to the tracks other than their remixes, and then find artists similar on the same labels or labels like that label. Like Sentient Audio Collective..had some cool stuff...find that some of the artists are also on Toes In The Sand, as Sentient hasn't released anything in months. So I check out Toes In The Sand, it leads me to other labels that the artists on the label are on or remixed for. Really it's just a chain..kind of like a tree I guess...one thing leads to another and whoola you found yourself a great track...often times one you never heard before.

Yeah I do that a lot too actually. Otherwise, I'll just start browsing the newest releases. Then, I'll go to the trance and prog house specific pages and check out the charts there.

I go through about 1 genre a day, add them all to my cart, then by the end of the week when I'm ready to purchase, I go through and re-listen to all the samples eliminating things I either:

A. Don't want.

B. Don't have money for at the time.

In the case of B, I keep a list in case I really want to go back and get them.

I probably put anywhere from 4-10 hours each week into listening to new music in one way shape or form. Some weeks more than others.

genres. I just sample and if it sounds good I add it.

Ill also try to keep track of how many openning, mid set, pre peak, and peak songs im getting so I dont just load up on just one.

also, does anyone listen to the original remix first to get an idea of what the song is, and then listen to the remixes? or do ya jump for the remixes and then go back to the original?

it depends what i go there for. sometimes i have certain tracks in mind so i just buy those. other times i'll just listen to a bunch of samples and then see what i like and what i don't like. i try to listen to labels that i like, but i can never remember the names of the smaller ones so i miss out on all those good tunes

I go for the originals first.
