^^nah mate you can't be serious. I mean I think Sydney in a lot of places is a pretty dirty city (ie Oxford St ect) and univiting... corporate greed, skyscrapers and crazy homeless people walking around (sad to see shit metal heath services in Sydney). All that having said Amsterdam is much dirtier. The redlight district is the centre of town and every morning they hose the coblestone street down from all the garbage. It stinks. People just piss in the street whereever. There are too many sleazy strip joints and way to many trashy tourist shops on the main streets. Being afraid of muscley leather fetish gay guys on there way to and from the gay fetish clubs wich is on the same street as the hostels was kinda disturbing. (I don't have anything against gay people its just that in that situation I felt unsafe at night. There are public urinals along some main streets to wich is gross. The canals everywhere would be pretty beautiful if the water wasn't an opaque green!
Okay okay. Firstly I LUV Melbourne... no seriously I fell in love with it 1st time I visited there last year for Godskitchen and was addicted by the second time I went there for an all clubbing all raving weekend for Two Tribes this year... (ie bass station, 2tribes, PHD then sleep then Vinyl Warning, then mix at freinds house )
Okay so I am originally from Sydney and been well into the trance scene there. Wasn't expecting Melbourne to be so good as Sydney is a bigger city.. but boy I was wrong!!
Anyway visited Amsterdam for a week back in '04 before going to Nature One in Germany and Zurich Street Parade and Energy in Switzerland plus a bunch of clubs in Berlin. Honestly the big clubs in Sydney are much better than Amsterdam (and probably quite a bit of Europe). I went to probably the biggest club in Amsterdam, Escape. It's fairly big.. almost as big as Home but a lot older dirtier no wikked lighting lasers ect like you find back home and you gotta pay for the toilet wich is just insane esp with alcohol/drug consumption. Same with Berlin... Tresor is probably the best but still it is small and old the Casino Club with PvD plays at sometimes is basically a wharehouse that is decorated a little.. Looks rundown and even the 'Casino' sign had letters broken off when I was there... (it's a joke that the voted worlds number one DJ holds residencies there! What a dump!) Trance isn't played in Amsterdam (or for that matter Berlin) in the big clubs on a weekly basis like Sydney. They are much more into Dutch Hardcore or Gabba (like the Thunderdome Parties) or clubs that play a kind of club/tech house as with Escape. Obviously the raves over there are world class and simply amazing ... but bottom line the clubs there suck compared to Sydney or Melbourne. I didn't get a chance to visit clubs in Zurich, Switzerland (coz the weekend I was raving at Street Parade then Energy ) but from what I hear some great trance DJs but clubs are small.
I was surprised at what was popular and played at the main clubs in Amsterdam and Berlin. Especially since most of the good vinyl comes from there. Strange. Melbourne has a bigger following in this scene in terms of all the clubs and raves on every weekend. It's amazing to see the kids in the morning just walking around the city in phatties on their way to PHD or some other recovery party after a rave.
ps. after spending 10months away from Australia I was homesick for how they dance!! Nothin I saw around the world beats watchin a whole crowd of people doin tha Melbourne Shuffle. -drools-
