Music Appreciation

So I was having lunch with a bunch of people at my school and we started talking about what type of music receives the most appreciation from its fans
ei - edm, we have big parties, dance
rock, has big concerts
rap, rap concerts, underground freestyling
and all those brands of music and their own thing

my opinion was definatly biased since i am a fan of EDM, and i stated how there are raves, huge concerts, people go to celebrate the music and a person at these events can literally have a fulfilling night just dancing for 8 hours

some ppl said its due to the drugs, which may be tru

also they said rap is more appreciated, since people who actually listen to rap, listen to the lyrics, derive meaning from the lyrics
they support the artists that they feel give off a good meaning and actually have something too say

the debate mostly went between rap and edm
but i thot id bring this up on here
so what do you all think, which type of music receives the most apprecation from their fans/listeners?

true music is appreciated by music fans. The most accomplished "genre" musicians i know have a very well rounded taste for music of all genres. A true fan of music can also distinguish a good song from a bad song even in a genre they dont like based on production quality and atmosphere of the song.

Do dance music fans appreciate music less than hip hop fans in north america? Not at all. Except in north america there arent as many dance music fans so sadly we cannot have the festivals that europe has (and never will do to our stupid laws)

But that doesnt mean dance music fans here arent any less passionate about the music.

On the contrary, go to a commercial hip hop night and that music is generally background noise to getting drunk and picking up for most of those people. A TRUE hip hop fan wouldnt be caught dead there.

I'm not a fan of rap. That being said, I have a huge respect for that genre. The lyrical genious of people like Marshall Mathers et al. blows my mind--SO talented. I have to admit, the music doesn't speak to me like Electronica (Trance/House) does. I think that rap and EDM both have similar roots in that they have underground scenes that kept them from being mainstream for quite a long time, mostly even by design. Rap has certainly gained a lot of mainstream momentum in the last 5 years thanks to the efforts of some startlingly talented pioneers, but I think (imho) in North America, EDM is still relatively underground (cough, tiesto, cough), and the people who love and adore EDM would keep it that way, to protect it from the masses who like to water everything down.

I was listening to the sound track from 'four brothers' last night, very soulful, and i thought...wow, my appreciation for music has increased in the last year...even this speaks to me; where i wouldn't have given it a chance in my mainstream top 40 days of yester-year....

Uhmm, I'm no expert... but... the iambic pentameter of the words and choice of vocabulary is offensive, humorous, shocking and very crafty. Though it's not my cup of tea, I recognize the creativity and talent within it. *shrug*

It's really all a matter of personal oppinion. Although house is mostly all I listen to now, I still respect all other music. Each one is unique in it's own way, weather it put a smile on someones face, or make a hard day that much easier. All kinds of music touch different people in different ways depending on what they grew up around, or where they live. That is why I respect all music, I only prefer to listen to certain kinds, but that does not mean that I hate another.
