I too have only had my decks for < 1 year (summer, actually).
It really is a great learning experience, and a fun one at that.
I don't really have many times where I think I'm terrible, but there definitely are those times when I get annoyed because I can't beatmatch, or I fail to mixout before a track runs out, etc.
When I listen to my recordings, sometimes I notice things that I don't notice when I'm mixing, either something works really well or isn't beatmatched, things like that, and I wonder why I don't notice. =P

Agreed.
Just coming up on 2 years myself, and I've been booked for New Years at a prominent club here in Boston, so that's exciting.
But I often listen to mixes by other DJ's, and it's so easy to think "Damn, I'll never be that good." But then you have to remember that many of then have been spinning for 10+ years, and it really does come down to experience and practice.
If you are really feeling down on the whole thing, step away for a week or so... then come back, download some fresh tracks, and you'll be in love all over again.
Oh, and when you are feeling down on the whole thing, you will likely begin to suck more. I find I mix best when I'm just relaxed and having fun. When you start to try really hard, you WILL mess up more. Yes, it always requires constant focus, but you should be having a good time, not screaming at your decks. If that's the case, take a break!

I'm just about 3 years now and I def get a bit down about the whole thing. It's a much different world for a DJ now even vs 3 years ago but one thing that remains key in my practice is stayin positive about it 100% of the time. |

I got my first CDJ's and mixer on March this year (Prior to this Had one year mixing with Traktor)
For me it started very quickly, but I think I was Lucky in some ways.
2 Weeks after I got my equipment I had my first Gig (About 300 People), and they all went crazy, had pretty good Interaction with them. I was to suposse to play 1 hour and half, but I ended up playing 6 Hours by owner Request.
2 Weeks after that, had my second gig, and I opened for Benny Bennasi, Everything went right. and I find out since my first gig that playing live is easier than playing on my bedroom, I think the energy of the people help you alot. of course you gotta be confident about what you are doing to feel this way, if you are afarid of the audience I think it could be the opposite way.
Had a few gigs after that and 5 months later had my first International Gig with Steve Helstrip, that was a great feeling.
Now I've been lucky and also dedicated to this.
and sometimes I feel like I'm not good because I can not mix well.
I try and sya, make 5 awesome mixes every week, like If I were a Top DJ, I would have 5 Gigs per week, so If I want to be good, I should be able to pull great mixes almost all days.
Of COurse this doesn't happen, andI odn't get 5 Gigs a Week (Lol), but
when I compare myself to the experts, I feel I lack of Experience to do this.
I remember when I started to mix with Traktor, just to do 1 cool Transition I had to practice for days, right now that can happen Instantly sometimes. So I think if I keep at it practicing, maybe someday I'll be able to play great mixes very often.
I've listened to some famous DJ's early episodes of Radio Shows, and they often talk during the transitions, avoiding the listener to listen to the fuckups or bad transitons.
I think if you want to reach to the pro level, it will take time and dedication.
I keep Learning everyday =)
