Movie Review: The Fountain

I just got back from seeing this (taking a break from essay hell).

Anybody else see this? There isn't much point in discussing the plot, except to say don't go into the theatre in anything less than a clear state of mind. Visually stunning, perhaps a bit too philosophical.

Quite a unique kind of film though, compared to the absolute drivel that Hollywood churns out these days.

Thoughts?

It's an interesting movie that, at the very least, MAKES YOU THINK! So few movies do that these days. Anybody who tells you this movie is "stupid" probably had absolutely no idea what was going on.

I'm not sure I "got it" except an overall idea. This is the man who brought us Requiem For A Dream. We thought about smoking a J before going in but it's a good thing we didn't. I would have been confused as all hell.

i saw it yesterday and this movie wasn't exactly sketchy sunday friendly

yeah the movie was def a deep one, and i got it, but my friend and i burst out laughing at the end of it because it was way deeper than what we had expected. the guy beside us was crying. hehe...oops.

hugh jackman and rachel weisz were great, the storyline between them was super sweet, the flashback parts to the book were cool, but all that crazy meditation/making out with the tree stuff kinda lost me. visually though, it was very pretty.

I saw the Fountain during the Film Festival. My mind keeps on trying to bridge the future with the present and the past. I can't really pass judgement on the film as I'm not sure what I was seeing. Too many questions, too little answers.

For visuals and acting, it was brilliant, but the tree of life confused me when Hugh Jackman was flying towards the nebula. I can not bridge that theme with Rachel Weisz somehow.

spoiler herein so stop reading if you dont' want to know.

I guess what I took, overall, from the movie is that you cannot cheat death, no matter how hard you try. At least that's the easiest and most logical conclusion that I can make right now. I'll see it again in a few months on DVD and see what else I can come with in terms of definitive answers.

she is the tree. in the book, he's looking for the tree of life, the thing that will keep the queen alive. just like in reality, he's looks for a cure for her. remember how he's always talking to the tree and saying "we're almost there...i won't let you die..."? it's a metaphor for his real life...just like how when she's still alive she points out the nebula that the mayans based their civilization around. that's what they're moving up toward when they're in the giant bubble.

Saw the trailer...seemed like a really good film. Can't wait to see it actually! Just hope its not as depressing as Aronofki's Requiem For A Dream.

the past is the book she wrote, the future part is the last chapter he wrote. both trying to explain the present time. In the end he had to come to the realization there is no such thing as immortality.

for some reason i think the present tense was written part of the book too cause he was able to change a bit of it at the end. maybe she documented the present.

either way it got bad reviews. my gf and i went despite that cause i forced her, and we both left confused but figured it out by the time i dropped her off. truly a smart movie made to fool the average person.
