Yes I know the DJ tag is rather goofy and DJ Druid is apparently already a well known DJ ....somewhere. Unfortunately that's not me. Anyway, I've been DJ'ing (use the term losely) for going on 4 years now running off of a pc as resident DJ in a smaller town in B.C. Canada. I've gradually been working in some trance/techno/house into my nights and getting a growing response from these once hip-hop/rock/country (anti-techno) crowds. The main stuff that's been hitting well is alot of Tiesto like Traffic, Love comes again and a mix with Armin. And some more abstract stuff like Akcent and *sigh* Bass Hunter. Was curious if you guys could suggest anything along those lines that may still get a response and help me get some 'culture' into this poor sheltered backwater town.

well what I'm doing most nights is blasting off with some house remixes of well known hits...for example Beyonce - Check on it...there's a house remix I can't remember by who now...

well...then some Sander Kleinenberg tracks etc...just do a search for some remixes...you can find a lot...

that remix of Cranberries just came to mind...or U2 - Staring at the sun (Brothers in Rythm Remix)...you can always mix a real trance or prog choon into these and the crowd will just keep dancing, because they think it's a part of it...and before they think the trance one which you mixed in is too long you should be back with another pop remix...if you keep them entertained for some time they'll get drunk and dance to anything you wish...I even started a party with R'n'B and at midnight everybody was dancing to some hard stuff from Defqon.

Beyonce - Ring The Alarm (Freemason's Club Mix) is actually pretty good too, and I got fairly good response out of that at the Halloween party I played at. (Sample)

Housy songs with retro 80's and classic rock elements would probably work well.

nirvana - smells like teen spirit (adam freeland mix)
white stripes - 7 nation army (remix i dunno but its there)
streetlife - queen machine (remix of queen song) i can pm you a link.

and try some mixing some breakbeats into the program, that might work.

To sort of sum things up, find remixes of popular songs, or at least those that will be somewhat familiar to your crowd. After you capture the crowd and have them reacting positively to a remix (most of the remixes of pop stuff will be house), you can sneak in another track after, and they'll still love it. Just make sure the transition is smooth, so they don't suspect a thing...

Gradually work more and more in, and eventually you may get them anticipating/demanding the genre. =D

At least, that's how it works in theory. Haven't had a chance to apply it personally.

it does kind of work most of the time...

there's this guy at the club I ocassionally play at...and he's just like...hmmm...let's play a track, let's play another...he mixes kinda averagely and never smiles or interacts...

What he did was that he played a remix of Madonna's hung up...and then he played Kraak and Smaak - These Days ... (I'm not sure about the name from the top of my head now.)

he was quite well able to clear out the dancefloor :-/


the other night I tried the same thing...the only difference was that I tried posing a bit...and smiling...waving at people etc...just to show I'm enjoying it...and the dancefloor was packed in a second...

you know...those pop-people just need you to start posing...smiling...and looking friendly and shit...


(then you can tell them fuck off to their requests)


interaction is a biiiiiiiiiig factor!

wow ur in Quesnel, i didnt think any EDM stuff would be happening up there. Glad it is though we need as much as possible in BC there is nothing once u get outside Vancouver. Im in Langley and there is barley anything here. As for tracks to play i would recommend some DT8, Darren Tate, Jon O'bir, Activa, Sander Van Doorn and Andy Hunter.
Check those out and if u like what u hear let me know and i will give u some more recommendations
