Sextuplets born to Susan Rosenkowitz and her husband Colin, Jan. 11, 1974 in Cape Town, South Africa, were the first known to survive their infancy. Canada's most famous multiple births were the Dionne quintuplets, delivered in May 1934 by a country doctor in a rural northern Ontario farmhouse. They became international Depression-era celebrities, their every move recorded and written about. They were the first-ever quints known to have survived infancy. The Ontario government placed them in a specially-built hospital, where the children were put on public display. More than three million people came to watch them play behind a one-way screen. Their mother for fought nine years to regain custody. In 1998, the three surviving sisters and their families received $4 million compensation from the Ontario government for their childhood mistreatment. One of the three surviving quints, Yvonne, died in June 2001 at the age of 67. She was survived by her sisters Annette and Cecile. News of the B.C. sextuplets' birth came as another sextuplet, John Van Houten of Hamilton, Mich., celebrated his third birthday. Four of John's brothers and sisters - Gerrit, Nolan, Peyton and Samantha - will have their birthdays on Jan. 16, while the youngest Van Houten sextuplet turns three a day later.
