I'm under the impression that most of music (especially drum'n'bass) sounds a lot better when you listen to it at high(er) volumes. For example, some albums for which I thought that they were average after listening to them at normal volume are actually very good after I listened to them at high volume. Maybe it's because when it's louder, you pay more attention to it while doing other stuff (browsing forums, chatting on MSN...), or is it just me?

It's all about the bass. Mammoth bass makes a record, so in a proper club atmosphere with bass and lights and party people..the record has it's way with you! When I buy tracks to be played, I think big room, and picture the whole scene going down in my head.
I know it's even better at clubs, but right now I'm talking about home listening, in my case, on the headphones.

it should be turned up as high as the recording allows, so that there is no clipping. EQ should be flat.

Music sounds amazing when it's cranked up, it's the way it was intended.
Countless tunes sound amazing at full volume, whereas they sound only a fraction of that at normal listening volume.

I hate idiots who insist on turning the volume up to maximum simply for the sake of it, because it's painful to hear and often the sound becomes distorted. However, music at a high volume is like a film at the cinema: not essential to enjoy it but you feel you get a better experience.
tis a well known trick in audio sales. When you have all the equipment interconnected through switch panels, in theory so you can swpa just the speakers but keep amp, cd player etc the same, turn up the volume so the speakers you want to sell sound better. louder will sound better, before the point of distortion of course
