I agree with you there tu_face, trance will become much more progressive. Tiesto and Ferry Corsten are a good example, they're spinning more and more progressive.
I have to say I aint such a fan of progressive
I like to hear it when I'm just chilling or so, but I don't like to hear it on parties/raves...
That's the reason I'm getting into techno and dark hard-trance and stuff... Techno RULEZ!!!
One thing that concerns me: hardhouse getting popular. far too popular. It's just so cheap and corny and cheesy etc, etc! But hey, that's just my opinion.

i think its going deeper and darker too.. but there ain't nothing wrong with hard house.. hard house can span a range from nu-nrg, down to the techno end..
and its nice sometimes to have it in a peak time set..
although its going deeper and darker, its just one of these trends, who knows what's gonna happen next year..
maybe its going to go back to uplifting..

Maybe, but the uplifting side of the trance industry somewhat struggled last year (Possibly the reason for HH becoming so popular?). Maybe thats because 1998 & 1999 were so fuckin good for uplifting trance it was unbeleivable, but i still get the vibe from people that they want something new and different, and in my veiw unless the way some of the artists make their tunes changes soon it isnt gonna be uplifting that gives people this.

yeah I think progressive will take over. Progressive is much broader than most genres. Trance is actually a sub-division of prog. I agree with Jukx on The HH part. Some HH stuff is crap, but the real good stuff is awesome. Mauro Picotto is getting more and more popular and the Tiestos sound is fading. The likes of Marco V are coming into the picture and that is the step to the next trend.
I went to Innercity in 1999 and in the Main Hall you had a more trance theme and this year (just a year later) there was only one real trance DJ.
I think eventually we will end up at techno after the progressive. Everything ends at techno and then there will be another new trend and it will go on and on forever unless it turns into gabber or hardcore then we are DOOOOOOOMED.

Yeah, uplifting trance was big 1-2 years ago, nowadays it's hardhouse, nu-nrg, hard trance + some progressive trance (at least in Finland). Techno is also regaining popularity at clubs after having been the juice of UG circles for some time. Personally I love uplifting trance, but hardcore makes me stomp huge craters on the floor in XTC. I don't listen to hardhouse outside parties though since it's way too repetitive and simple. I guess it's the club/rave athmosphere which adds extra spice to the music and the entire experience.

I predict that hardhouse, trancecore and that hard banging stuff will be quite shortlived phenomena since if you think about people who are new to the scene.... what is their musical background? Well, usually some pop, rnb, classical... easy stuff so to say. Then if you take such a person to HH rave they start screaming for ear plugs after 30 seconds because the contrast is so extreme comparing to what they have heard before. In other words, trance will never disappear and I'd see uplifting trance as the first step in becoming an electronica addict simply because it's feelgood music + you can listen to it even when you are not raving etc. Hardcore is also very boring if you listen to it a lot. For me 1-2 HH parties a month is enough, but I do enjoy going to them. A bit contradictory wouldn't you say?

Like the "DJ Aliases/Projects"-thread indicated, the trance scene is controlled by a handful of elite artists who have their own style and they stick with. What we need here is some fresh touch, new ideas and not that same formula used over and over again tu_face was talking about. I think Planet Funk - Chase the Sun is a good example of mixing different styles (pop, electronica/progressive). Also the fact that most people don't recognize any of the tracks played at parties tells something about the music...

So in brief, the scene is looking for fresh touch which still has the most powerful elements like energy buildups, nice melodies and NRG that takes you to another dimension! As an electronica addict I think it's wise to listen to lots of different stuff and see if you like it. I don't really see any point listening to only Tiesto and Corsten or just HH. Explore and be amazed!

I wonder when the composers start to use brainwave indicators to find the most stimulating melodies

Vision: after mobile phone location technology gets a bit better and standardized your own top N list gets automatically sent to the DJs' computer systems from your mobile phone memory the moment you step into the venue. Suddenly the organizers have the merged top list of 4000+ addicts. Neat, ha?

Progressive house and progressive trance have already taken over... I dunno, too much of anything is no good... Epic and uplifting got to the point where it all sounded the same, nothing too original is coming out lately..

I totally agree with Mindbender (dude u always gotta write an essay, but they make total sense) never limit yourself to one genre or style, to me it's all about balance. Not too much progressive, or uplifting or even trance (I'm soooooo a tranceadddict still tho)... I think after progressive, it will be a bit lighter again... (like infinity mentioned)

I dunno I'm looking forward to the future of trance, in whatever way it evolves... if it didn't evolve, I wouldn't be listening to it right now...

i'm gonna set my prediction for the year 2002 now:

the trance scene (in my opinion) will be on the verge of techno by the end of this year.. but then in 2002, i think ppl will make techno become more uplifting, and eventually.. by the end of 2002.. we'll be back at uplifting trance.
