Looking for compressor with sidechain triggered by MIDI NOTES

Hi All

Does anyone know a good compressor that can be sidechained usng midi notes on a midi channel rather than feeding in a key sound?

Thanks

FJ

are you using FL?

cause if you are, you can do it with the peak controller method.

What you're suggesting is impossible in the literal sense - the "sidechain" is part of the audio routing, and MIDI is just instrument data.

I think what you're really looking for is a MIDI gate. If you really, really need the nonlinearity of a compressor, then just put together a regular sidechain setup with something like a kick, but don't duplicate the output channel of the kick. The kick won't be heard, so it's pretty much the same thing as what you're asking.

Or with the fruity keyboard controller.

No not looking for gate, need to be able to adjust the attack / release on it, but was hoping for a more precise trigger to pull a bassline down. I suppose i could create a sharp compressed white noise snare to trigger it.

If using battery and cubase how would you mute the audio output? Just pull down the level fader and send it pre fader to the compressor trigger??

You can do that with a MIDI gate.

Or if youre using a VST with a gate effect then you could try making the gate come active when the kick is...then just change the velocity of it so it doesnt sound so sharp and more smoother.

I believe Kjaerhus makes a gate that does precisely what you want, including adjustable attack, release, and hold times. You can use a sidechained audio track or a MIDI track to activate the gate. See here: http://www.kjaerhusaudio.com/gag-1.php .

That software looks damn good but does anyone know some cheaper alternatives? I don't think what this does justifies the price, it looks like it could be a helpful tool when trying to process acoustic drums.
I am going to have a look through kvr for some free ones, but if anyone comes across a good one make sure to post it here.
