i need to buy a laptop... suggestions?

I need to buy a laptop for my Financial Profiling class. All I ask is that it is not slow, can run excel and have wifi so i can get on the school's wireless internet. I don't want to spend a lot of money because I'm not going to be using it often other than school. Can I get any suggestions? Thanks!

this would be perfect for you: http://www.gateway.com/products/GCo...d=nx570x&seg=hm

while there is one $100 cheaper, this one is really worth the vaule. Now since XP is no longer availabe, its good to have more memory. No need for a security package. Some of the free stuff out there is actually better.

$649.

I was going to post something, but what john brought up is a really good deal. Dell usually has some great deals, and I trust them especially for repairs, usually are easily to replace since they all use the same parts. But as of now...follow john hehe

Not so much with a student discount. $1099 base (before discounts) is well worth it to me, for a reliable, solid and fun little notebook.

while better is a relative term, the notebook offers more features then a macbook. most computers are reliable. Its the user that is not.

but anyways:

* 1.83GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
* 512MB memory
* 60GB hard drive1
* Combo drive

Ships: Within 24 hours
Free Shipping
$1,099.00

for that price, you really can get a more powerful notebook..

Yes, but no OS X, not to mention other useful patents.

It's all up to the user, like you said.

This user would not want to be running Windows XP 2.0...erm, I mean Vista.

Yea def, the way karen described this computer, it will be more of a textbook expense....I don't believe a macbook will fit this category for just one use.

I love macbooks to death, they replace most pc's (well not for games) but I can never see them as the business computer.

Simple, cheap, fast and doesn't matter what happens to it...sounds like thinkpad or gateway, I would baby my mac for everything its worth.

Meh. I suppose. When she said she didn't want to spend a lot of money, I didn't think a thousand bucks is a lot of money for a notebook. I spent over 3k on my MBP, so I understand *that* being a lot of money for a notebook.

I guess eBay's always an option, when you're trying to value shop.
