hey guys and girls.

i have been working on a techno tune and i need some opinions on the kick.

i plan on not using a bassline - not that this kick leaves much headroom for a deep bassline anyway.

i want the kick to provide the sub/bass instead of having a synth providing the sub/bass.

the track is a minimal techno track and i want the low kick to be the main focus on it.

what i need to know is how the kick is sounding to you? does it have enough punch? clarity? warmth? originality?

It's good but it could use a little more midrange, giving it a bit more punch...


However i really dont like how it sounds when you cut the sub bass and it's just that click, it's kind of an ugly click, doesnt sound like it's in the same groove as that snare, i dont know, they just dont fit for me...


i also listen to this sort of music quite a bit. this could easily be a peak hour minimal banger, it's allllll about the subtleties with this music, i highly suggest you do not structre this song the same way you would structure a house or trance song, this genre is much different than those and many producers have failed to realize this causing a massive influx of super shitty minimal floating around.


if you want to make minimal, make it because thats whats working for you, not because you want to make minimal or whatever. the whole point of this music is function over form and when you lose sight of that, your clicks will fail.

hmmm I strongly disagree with your point here...to an extent...

You should make minimal just for the sake of it, even if you don't know shit about the genre...it's just another experience which counts...actually trying to produce many genres can help you broaden your taste and even your abilities...(some genres have totally different "mix manners") and such...

You can once also find yourself doing an R'n'B track, finding out, that's the genre you want to produce for life...

I strongly suggest, that everyone making music, should (doesn't have to) but should, try as many genres as they like...

Also don't make prejudices like that a house producer or trance producer in this case, can't make minimal...well maybe the result won't be minimal tune per se...but it might be an important experience for developing yourself as an artist.

@Rich: Sorry I'll check the track later, because my ears are fucked after a mixing session with a rock band...Head up, though, mate

It sounds pretty good. It just needs a little push in some direction... maybe apply a tiny bit of gated reverb in the right frequencies and let em rip.

I would say that it's got too much click and not enough punch, if you plan to use it without a bassline. The sub-bass range sounds just right to me, though.

What you might consider doing is just layering another kick on top of it, one with more of a sharp punch, and just EQ out the sub-bass on it. Also EQ out a little bit of the click on the current kick.

That's my two cents anyway. And I sort of agree with Greg, I'm not a big minimal techno fan but I can say this is more on the tech-house side than techno, which tends to have more subtle transitions and more effects.

diginut - i tried adding a kinda middy kick with subs cut (in between the clicky one and the deep low one) but the track kinda lost its minimal vibe and turned into a more standard sounding track. any ideas how i can regain the power you get from a middy punch/kick without making the kick sound different - if ya know what i mean.

maybe a very low snare?

I'm only guessing what you tried, since I can't really hear it without a sample. But part of the problem may be what Allied Nations pointed out in that the arrangement itself doesn't really follow the minimal techno formula. Some of the percs are pretty thick, like the open hat, and that upper-range noise going on in the first half is pretty in-your-face. Not that any of these things are necessarily bad depending on what you're shooting for, but I think they may have more to do with why you're not getting the desired effect than the kick.

Or maybe you just didn't use the right kick. Post a sample and I'll try to comment.

Personally I think the snare has too much noise in the mids/low mids. Not enough punch with that snare. The bass drum sounds great, and I would leave that as it is.

Try comressing the snare with a 40ms attack and layering it with a punchier version.
