I thought you were going to talk about my wallet...

...or that thing on my bosses face...

I'm not gonna pretend I'm smart about this sort of thing...I've just read some books about it before, but I've known about these big ass black holes for a while. And man, a solar system? THATS TINY! LOL

There are SUNS that are 10,000X as big as our sun, with solar systems 10,000 times bigger. It's actually quite common! You've seen those pictures of "spiral" galaxies with 9 or ten arms on them? (like this one)

See those little dots in the arms? Those are CLUSTERS OF SOLAR SYSTEMS...clusters of stars (SUNS!!) Each small dot on those arms is a cluster of suns (and many planets that are too dark to see!).

Tonight when it gets dark, hold your hand up to your eye and "pinch" a 1 inch section of the sky. Scientists have found that when the hubble telescope focuses on a one inch section of deep space IN ANY DIRECTION, we find CLUSTERS OF GALAXIES...**CLUSTERS OF FARKING GALAXIES**....millions of them...in every 1 inch cube in the sky! From the latest data we have, astronomers believe there are at least 200 billion galaxies in the universe.

mwahahahahaha!

yeah. i've been meditating on this kind of stuff for the last few months, contemplating what to make of it. the scale i just really can't fathom. the thing i don't understand about the big bang.. is what existed before? what was space before matter was introduced to it via the big bang? and is there a finite end to the universe? like they say that the universe is expanding.. but for something to expand there has to be room for it, are there barriers? maybe it really is infinite, something i can't really fathom in my mind because us humans are so used to finite easily definable things

Read up Brief History of Time for a nice introduction to these questions. I can try to answer a couple of your questions based on my limited knowledge of this subject...but there is an in-house astronomer in PDD who prolly know better

What existed before big bang ? what was space before matter was introduced to it via the big bang?- It is meaningless to ask these question because the universe, space and time began with the big bang and whatever there was before it has no consequence now whatsoever.

is there a finite end to the universe? - At the moment we are expanding and if we estimate the density of the universe with all the matter we think there is in it, then we will probably continue to expand forever because the said density is significantly less than the value which is needed to halt the expansion and start the contraction. Dark matter holds the key to this question, and with new evidence pointing to its abundant existence, it is quite possible for the universe to stop expanding. In that case, we will head towards the "big crunch" or so where everything will assimilate in one mass.

This documentary is absolutely amazing. Loved it. We should not feel small considering the vastness of the universe. Our intelligence is large enough to comprehend its working and that is a phenomenal feat in itself. Besides, all our limitations can be overcome by working out appropriate solutions. We have been doing it till now, and I don't see how we can be limited in our ability to do that in the future.

Yeah, I think some of the reasons we can't really picture or even imagine what it actually could all be is because we look at the universe and assume that the same rules that apply to us apply to it, which seems unlikely.

We live and die, and we follow patterns and routines, and recognize the size of things... so we assume that everything must also abide by these rules.

And perhaps they do. But I think it's more likely that certain ideas, like beginning and ending, or size and scale, actually don't exist at all.

Hell, for all we know, the universe may loop back into itself as it gets progressively larger or smaller. Maybe the cells in your arm ARE a part of some distant galaxy.

Holographic theories are interesting, in that they have the universe existing as a single refraction point, from which the rest of existence is magnified out from, kind of like an illusion.

It really is mind boggling to think that we even exist, and can contemplate our own existence.

As a matter of fact, sometimes I get moments where I'm at the computer, and it's just a "WOW" moment. The fact that I'm able to communicate and utilize this complex series of electricity and projections, and the fact that we were able to come up with it... it's just beyond.

We like to believe we've got it all figured out, and we have a few things perhaps closely figured out, but the magnitude of this massive craziness may be unfathomable to us in this current evolutionary stage.

Imagine a frog trying to understand how a jetplane works, or what it does. If it would even bother to do so. Well, that's us.
