Multi-Million Dollar Ecstasy Bust In Vaughan
Thursday April 5, 2007
Police literally stumbled upon a mammoth drug shipment in Vaughan, after officers investigating car break-ins spotted some suspicious behaviour.
Undercover agents were at a parking lot investigating thefts from vehicles when they noticed two S.U.V.'s parked bumper-to-bumper. Then something happened that set in motion a multi-million dollar drug seizure.
"They were transferring large heavy suitcases," reveals Insp. Tom Carrique. "It wasn't a casual throw. It took a couple of them to actually physically pick up the suitcase and put it into the other vehicle."
It turned out to be the largest seizure York police have ever seen. They netted over $9 million in ecstasy pills and $1.5 in cocaine.
"Each one of these ecstasy tablets is worth $10 to $30 on the street," Carrique said while surveying the enormous cache of illegal drugs.
Two of the men arrested are licensed pilots. Police allege they flew the drugs from B.C. where they live, to Ontario, where the third suspect is from.
"I've worked 20 years as a police officer and I've never seen a street seizure anywhere close to this," Carrique adds.
