I got fed up with AVG eating up too many resources and being a minor pain, had McAfee before that and it was better (but not free).
My PC is behind a Linksys router which has a hardware firewall, and I get all the Windows updates which patch any newly found security flaws (I hope) and give me some protection with the Windows software firewall and anti-spyware. I think Windows is a lot safer than 4 or 5 years ago and I feel pretty secure.
Therefore I removed AVG and also McAfee anti-virus about a year ago, no problems at all and my computer runs fine. Same with my 3 year old laptop which has never had any 3rd party anti-virus software. Going commando.
