When do you think PCI will be completely phased out? Any estimates?

I'm about to buy a new interface. I would prefer the PCI version because its $100US cheaper, but I'm scared I wont be able to use it at all in 2 years!

PCI right now is the fastest to-motherboard bus there is, so I think you will see it for many more years. It's already been here for a long time.

PCIe is faster...

There are some motherboards out there with only 1 PCI slot now days. I get the feeling i'll be boned in 12 months.

i've the same feeling. it was already very hard to get a proper mainboard with 3 pci-slots 18 months ago.

lol sorry, I was assuming PCI / PCIe in the same family. Yeah do not get a "PCI" as it WILL be phased out. PCIe, obviously, is the better choice, even if it will cost you a bit more.

You can buy converters that let you run PCI cards in PCIex1 slots.

The latency is not going to be any higher than if you were just running it out of a regular PCI slot.

Obviously it's better to get a PCI-E card if you can, but I don't think PCI is going anywhere for a while.

intel macs don't even have/had pci slots.. RME & co also have pci-express cards. so i wouldn't stick to the old bus..

Latency will be higher, as it will have to go through a converter and another set of drivers. 100ms was a blatant exaggeration obviously though; it could well be a negligable increase, who knows.

I still wouldn't trust a PCIX chasis though, computers have enough incompatabilities already, they're also hell expensive!
Firewire/PCIe for the win.

I have three DSP cards at the moment which are all PCI so I can not afford to go the other route.

I've just ordered a new motherboard and had to get the one with 5 PCI slots on it.

I think some companies still cater for people who have expansion cards.

Yeah, we're talking in the microsecond range here, maybe even nanoseconds if the adapter isn't synchronous. In other words you can safely ignore it.

PCI-X is more of a server thing. Most consumer cards are PCI-E so you're going to want to go with that.
