Triple J Unearthed - Manda Graf

Meet Manda Graf - the little miss rock chick with an even bigger voice. When this pint-sized Taswegian takes to the stage and belts out a rockin’ tune, people stand up and take notice. No one’s quite sure how she delivers such kicking vocals. Like a mini-moke, decked out with a v8 engine, Manda has a commanding presence, no wall flowers here thanks.

At just 16 she won the people’s choice award on Channel 9’s Star Struck after being the only contestant selected from Tasmania - even then she conquered a field of 500. Now 23, Manda’s honed her skills and continues to write killer tunes with respected industry stalwarts Susie Ahern and Rob Sedky as well as fellow Tasmanite and stage buddy, guitarist extraordinaire Peron Lan. Her tune ‘Drift Back to You’ is a biting tale of love gone wrong… the kind where you’ve ‘moved on’ but those feelings haven’t entirely disappeared.

With a Suzie De Marchi sting in her voice, Manda channels the angst and torment of regret – with the listener on the front line. Add a tinge of RnB and you’ve got an acoustic act that stands out from the rest. She’s not your average rock chick. According to Susie Ahern, ‘She’s (Manda) one serious live performer who’s honest and forthright with passionate ideals.’

Then there’s the look. Which one you ask? It’s a revolving wardrobe with colours and hair-dos aplenty but it’s all about style, kinda like Audrey Hepburn’s taken a crash course in rock etiquette from Joan Jett. You’ve been warned.

for someone who's so anal about other people's grammar..........

I listened to 'Drift back to You', she's got a good voice, much better than some singers going around - but - the song didn't do it for me, didn't surprise me, nothing to make me sit up. Same old same old. Once the song got going in the second half it was better, but it still wasn't anything too different to what i've heard before.

Apple sounds like a quality acoustic track, quite good. Her voice makes this one stand out

thanks for listening nutter! agreed, i dont like much of what she writes, but she's only new to it so it can only get better. i just love her voice. when she matures some more im expecting some real quality. plus, she looks ridiculously hot on stage, and isnt that what mainstream music is about?

i had a listen.

i knew pretty much what she'd sound like judging from what she counted as her influences. my ex-girlfriend. although, this young lass is a bit better, as she puts a bit more effort into her career. (isnt it great to whinge about an ex). I digress. The point is, that style of singing has been overdone since the mid 90s. While her voice is fine (judging from a mixed track), its nothing unique and would probably suit fronting some chick rock band. But, if she can find an angle that gives her a slight edge, she could probably do fine; just not in the package she is now.

thanks for listening gumble! maybe its coz ive heard her sing live an awful lot, but theres definitely some uniqueness to her vocal chords. noticed it the very first time we met. i just dont think she sings to her strengths as often as id like. but im not listened to

but ill be passing on everyone's comments. cheers again, and thanks for posting criticism
