Dunno need some advice....new mixer or serato?

so my bday is coming up next week and im thinking of upgrading my setup. im thinking of getting either a pioneer djm-400 mixer (to upgrade from my current djm-300) ORRRRR serato scratch. on one hand i really want a mixer with fx but on the other hand i could use serato since burning cd's is a hassle and they just keep piling up....and also cuz you can't mix 2 tracks on the same cd. but then again serato is laptop based so if god forbid my laptop ever dies it will be useless and i cant easily afford a new laptop. so which one should i get?

I'd say go with Serato. I've been playing on my laptop for two years without any problems.

i'ld probably say the same thing...

better to get the ability to place an endless amount of tracks vs just another mixer... besides the clubs provide a mixer as default whenever you play out. (or should at least lol)

How about both? Hahaha get the Rane TTM57 Mixer. It has both Serato built in and a mixer with effects! hahaha

Or just get Serato!

A nice mixer should be the center piece of any setup. The mixer is what is going to most determine how you sound.

yeah i've been looking at it and the xponent midi controller that comes with it which basically looks like a pair of decks and a mixer. looks interesting but i dont know if its worth it.

could this be the future of djing?

Before you say that, keep in mind with virtual dj you can live sample and throw in multiple channels of clips, switch between a library of your own effects, and have your whole mp3 collection ready for mixing. That, and you can export the channels seperately to be mixed on a hardware mixer. As in, channels 1 and 2 on my DJM-3000 act as seperate decks coming out of my computer. I've also done this because I have a Behringer bcd-2000, which has a piece of crap internal audio card. I don't really see how that's any less honorable then ableton. If you don't want to auto-beatmatch you don't have to either. It also supports using time-coded vinyl in the software, but you have to have a fancy soundcard. Virtual DJ has a lot of customization options.

for the bcd-2000... strictly speaking as a midi controller, it does the job fine.

speaking as a MIXER... the audio quality is kind of poor, which is why I export the audio to the DJM3000. virtual dj also allows you to use your computer's sound card (and not the internal on the Behringer), but I haven't fooled around with the options that much.

If you stop by the next LA meetup feel free to fingerbang it, at least its something to think about.

I think henry was actually talking about the torq connectiv... the serato-like vinyl/cd timecode control from m-audio.
