Using 2 Accounts on 1 Computer

Up until now I've had 1 computer dedicated to for music production only..But Im gonna be switching to a laptop for the summer. I'd like to use the laptop for internet use as well. If I create 2 accounts in XP..1 for Internet use..and 1 for Music Production..Will any of the spyware and other stuff that you accumulate on the net affect the 2nd account for Music Production?

thank you

Using a different login on the same computer for day-to-day activities will accomplish precisely nothing in terms of overall security. If you run as a normal user (not an administrator) then you can reduce some (not all) security headaches, but you don't need a separate account for that - you should be able to run most of your music software that way as well.

Not for security reasons really. For performance reasons. Will the spyware and things on the Internet account affect the Music Production account? Plus for the Music Production account I'd turn the internet off alltogether.

sounds interesting, I'd like to hear some opinions about it as well, since I'm getting a lappy next week too still don't have an external audio interface, but that'll be on the way sooner or later also :-)

run it all off one account, theres no major difference and you'll get sick of constantly swapping accounts.

however, using firefox with the ******** extension should pretty much erradicate any chance of spyware.

Obviously if it doesn't help the security, then it's not going to help performance, since spyware gets on due to lax security (as well as the obvious human factors). Why would spyware care which account is signed on? They don't program these things to be polite and run in limited contexts - in fact, they're pretty much designed to continue running under any and all conceivable circumstances until they're forcibly removed.

If you don't want spyware to affect performance, then don't get spyware on your machine. Aside from virtualization there's no other solution.

seriously, though, your options would be to reduce user privileges (by not running as an administrator), use GOOD anti-malware software, or to dualboot with a linux. If you literally just want to browse the internet or do a bit of documenting, i'd recommend linux, probably ubuntu if you're new to linux

Same acount, but setup a different hardware profile.

I run a different profile for music production where everything not needed is disabled.
Internet
Network
CD ROM
Anti Virus
Themes
Wireless
etc

You don't need to install Linux just to look at porn. lol...

Install ******** for Firefox... it's pretty difficult to get viruses when flash, java, and java script are disabled by default!

This is pretty unnecesary... I just use the one account on my laptop and don't notice anything, although I can see how a different hardware profile might help.

Turning off wireless is a good idea
turning off antivirus is a good idea
but themes and graphics and stuff shouldn't make a difference overall, unless you've got some really extreme stuff going on.

I think uing two accounts is a waste of time and effort, you spend half the time trying to work out where you put files because you have 2 my documents folders, if your really that concerned a dual boot is probably better bang for your buck (your frustration and time).
