digital releases

as far as releases are concerned, usually we see them in CD or VINYL format.
i've been seeing WEB releases around, obviously composed of mp3 files, though i understand they can be ogg files.
are these legit?
i used discogs.com to see if something is legit.
if its not on discogs.com, i generally avoid it.
i will also check the artists website but have not found much on their "WEB" releases.
of course this assumes discogs.com is accurate, which is another subject.
anyhoo, this is discogs.com policy on digital releases ...

The release does not consist of one single track, and the tracks have to be explicitly linked together as one release.
The release has its own layout that can be printed and used for self-made CDr versions of that release.
Discogs does not accept downloadable gimmicks from artist pages (Example: remixes, live-versions, etc.) or self-made music that someone has uploaded to his/her webspace.

so my question, how do i know if a release i see on a digital purchase website labeled WEB or MP3 release is legit?
is this WEB release starting a new format of releases that will become more common ??
anyone know anything on this shit ??

Just buy from well known, trusted sources. Beatport, AudioJelly, etc.

to give an example, i was on beatport looking at an above & beyond release.
i think it was can't sleep.
it had it available for purchase/download for that particular release, defined by its tracks, was no where to be found on discogs or a&b site, or anjunabeats site.
i understand if its available for purchase/download it should be considered legit.
but why is it not recognized on other sites ??
and whats the difference between these and WEB releases ??
or are they the same.

and like i said, i rely on discogs for "legitness."
hahaha.
it seems the single most organized, and usually accurate, source of information for artist/track information.
is there another place you guys use ??
dont get me wrong, i've seen mistakes and errors on discogs.

Why go to sites to check if they're legit If Beatport or any other download store sells tracks they are legit. And the fact some releases aren't mentioned on the label's website is due to not updating the site.

Anyway digital tracks are replacing vinyl and even cd more and more.

when you say WEB release that is linked to only illegitimate/pirate music.. so i dont think this would be the best place to talk about that stuff

just get your music from beatport/aj/vonyc/trackitdown/djdownloads/cdjshop/label's website and youre guaranteed to have music in the most legimate and in perfect download quality (sometimes wave, but it wouldnt be a shitty reencode 320 either)

ok im glad you said that.
anything labeled WEB is not legit.
dont see why this is the wrong place to talk about it.
i now know to avoid it, and so do others who read it here.
with that said, why doesnt artist sites or discogs, recognize digital releases commonly found on beatport/aj/vonyc/trackitdown/djdownloads/cdjshop.
see my point ??
WEB releases are considered not legit.
what makes them different from the stuff available for purch/download.
whose to say the purch/download releases are legit ??
where does the source of legitimacy come from ??
my head hurts.

WEB release does not mean it isn't legit. "Web Release" and "Digital Release" are synonymous.

Stick with major sites and don't buy from shoddy-ass ones, I don't see what's so difficult...
