I think HL2 was far beyond just pushing boxes. Ravenholm was the finest example of how physics was a big part in HL2's design (whether it be as a method of offense and defense, or in puzzle solving).
I really enjoyed Far Cry's design of using the foliage and AI to promote avoiding ridiculously hard battles in an FPS. Going from bush to bush listening for anything the enemy might whisper that would indicate he suspected something fishy was nothing short of an innovative and immersive reform of the FPS Run'n'Gun style.
Once the aliens came into play and could "smell" me, it seemed like another generic FPS where every couple of levels I'd say "wow, those graphics look amazing", yet the gameplay had gone down the shitter.
I might enjoy the first few levels of Crysis of covering up my tracks as not to have an enemy gaurd notice footprints, blood stains on palm trees etc, but I have a feeling it's going to take another turn into "run, gun, look at the epic graphics, run, gun" once the aliens appear.
Now if there are 3-side wars between 30 Koreans, 30 aliens, and 30 US troops, each with air units, squad leadership commands, AI flanking techniques and artillery support, yeah, I'd say it'd be a damn good showing of next generation RAW POWA tech.
