Do you need a sound card that you can take with you to gigs? (i.e., to use with Ableton) Or is this strictly for home/studio use?

If you have a desktop computer, I would recommend the Edirol DA-2496. (I've used it for years and it is fantastic.) The reason that I recommend it is that it retails for about $800 (although it is now a legacy product) but if you're patient, you can find them on ebay dirt cheap because no one really knows about it.

This thing has ton of ins and outs. One of the things that i like about it is the front of it has inputs that are specially designed for mics and guitars -- so if you're doing any recording, it is really easy to get to those. For more permanent-installation devices like mixers and such, the connections are in the back. You need to have a desktop because it requires a PCI slot to connect the card to the PC. I'm not sure what your setup is like, but this thing is rack-mountable, which is a big plus for me.

That's my two cents; but again they are kind of hard to come by so if you need something immediately, this might not be the one for you.

Let us know what you end up getting and how you like it. Good luck.

(here's a couple pics of the device I have been talking about.)
