Up until now the PlayStation Network has been completely free to me. I only have one game, Blazing Angels, and you can play multiplayer on it and there is no charge. I'm still new to my PS3 so there COULD be games that charge (I obviously don't mean MMORPGs, those are almost pay-per-play all the time) but so far, no.
I can also access the PlayStation Store and download free demos. If I had a credit/debit card I can also buy and download PSP/PS3/PS1 classic games as well, similar to the 360 and Wii download services if I'm not mistaken.
I am not familiar with how XBox Live subscriptions work so...

The main difference is w/ Xbox Live (XBL), you get everything free like the PS3, EXCEPT you have to pay to play games online.
There are two levels of XBL, Silver and Gold.
Silver is Free and lets you Log into the online store to download stuff, and buy stuff, etc.
Gold is $50/year lets Play games online, log into online store to download stuff, and buy stuff. You also get to download demos early then Silver level.
I honestly had XBL Gold for my first year (mine expired in June) but haven't renewed it yet cause I don't really play online. I have but have found it a waste of time. Usually its like a 12 year old kid who has no life, and ends up quitting half way through a game.
Most of my friends don't have a 360, let alone any video games haha. So far i've got 1 friend on the 360, and no friends on the PS3 haha
Also, keep your eye out cause you can get a Gold membership for less when stores go on sale. I know Best Buy has sales all the time where all 360 accessories are 10%-20% and that includes subscriptions, and even XBL points! So you can actually get them cheaper!
