Damn sorry to hear about your misfortune and inconvenience, especially in Nob Hill of all places - it's not too bad of an area at all, which certainly proves it doesn't matter where you are.
yeah I always make it a habit to leave NOTHING in my car, not even gum wrapper gets left behind - once and a while I get nervous leaving a box in the back when my trunk is full, but that's usually in transit but I shouldn't chance it anyhow.
what the city needs is actually more cops, which we can't even afford
when my partner was living here she pretty much was a therapist / counselor for abused women and single mothers / children who had serious issues (at one point she had a 10 year old boy stick a gun to her face) which she was just numb to anyhow.
in any case point being is that I'm aware of the twisted drama that goes down in this city plus her uncle is also a police officer here who pretty high up in rank, so I hear all kinds of crazy things.
They don't even have enough people on duty to handle all the overwhelming cases that are extreme drastic issues like a: clip getting unloaded in a teenage boys face, a mother so cracked out she doesn't even clean her baby to the point that bacteria eats half of the little girls thigh, just recently on 12th street in broad morning daylight a gentleman was stabbed and the response time was so ridiculous SF General and Hall of Justice is just right down the street from this intersection - you get the picture. If they can't even handle the hundreds of cases like that per week, imagine what they're response time is for this; to some officers this is a minor robbery.
Not only that our officers don't exactly have the best reputation for honesty and positive public duty.
Although I've had some experiences where SFPD was on point and they handled the situation beyond my satisfaction and I definitely made sure those officers got the acknowledgement they deserve to their superiors.
I remember when an old car of mine got broken into at 550 and crazy thing was I was only gone for 2 minutes if that. All they took was a bunch of burned cds though LOL

I know there are a lot of good cops out there, I have some friends that are officers in other cities, and YES I agree SF does need more officers! But ultimately they are easy targets to pick on when bad stuff happens, they are on the streets every day and the most visible in the community... Unfortunately seems to me (and mind you I don't know anyone in the SFPD) that the police pretty much have their hands tied because the courts won't punish these "petty" crimes... I know there are much worse crimes that happen, but crime is crime and should be punished, if the police and courts are not capable of enforcing the law then that needs to be fixed, otherwise what use is law?
/end rant
This was the second time my car has been broken into, the last time (years ago) not in SF, over in the East Bay. About 30 cars in my apartment complex got hit in one night, they took all my CD's (200+)... this was pre-cdr days... so that really hurt, to lose a collection I had spent years building... and of course the stereo/subs/amp were all snached too.
2tall mentioned vandalism: I had my car vandalized w/ a can of black spray paint within 6 months of moving to SF. I agree, totally senseless!
it is estimated less 20% of auto breakins in SF are reported to the police, with the reported number of breakins last year at 15,000 that means the true # is more like 75,000, over 200 cars per day! That's pretty bad if you ask me.

The news today mention about muggings that have been happening in SF's Marina District, also. Channel 2 mentioned that someone was even shot at for trying to run away. Looks like these thugs have been targeting the surrounding areas because of what everyone says, lack of cops in the area.
I hope your stuff turns up if these guys are caught. I've had my car broken into before, but luckly nothing was taken since I leave nothing in my car. However, they did leave a big mess. The thought of someone going through my stuff made me feel violated.
Walk in pairs everyone!

Just wanted to let everyone know, my car was broken into a couple weeks ago, also I've seen a lot of broken glass around on the sidewalks so I know I wasn't the only one... I lost an older Sony CD deck, a pair of JBL 12" subs and a rockford fosgate amp. The only thing visible in my car was the Sony deck, and I never used my subs in the neighborhood so no one knew it was there. I guess they just "got lucky".
Anyway, just want to make everyone aware that SF streets are really bad, especially for parking, and people will break into your car for ANYTHING so just something to keep in mind, I'd hate for anyone to have to go through this shit... getting glass replaced and a new dash board costs some serious $$$
Also on that note, I wish the police in SF would actually do something about it, but from what I hear they literally look the other way. They won't waste their time because the DA won't prosecute these crimes... WTF are they getting paid for?
Stay safe everyone. | ensurance?
