getting pops out of your mixes

so i got this thread idea from the mixer to comp one. but it's a problem i've been having. see i recorded from my mixer to minidisc cuz i don't have a comp. when mixing there were no noticeable pops and when listening to MD there were no noticeable pops (except for one part where my worn-down needle skipped). my friend, and fellow TA (wuttup ICF), was kind enough to transfer MD to cd for me on his comp. but after i heard the cd there were all kinds of pops in it. i was wondering if there was an editing program that could remove the pops. or maybe it's just skipping like patticus said. i'm not sure. another friend said roxio (sp?) could remove pops but is there any other inexpensive software i could find that could assist in this matter. your advice, as always, is appreciated.

clean ur records and needles before you spin a set

make sure ur crossfader is ok too

remember its a record so there will always be some type of noize

cooledit has a very nice pop/click/noise removal feature that works really well on most samples from vinyl. i've used it several times with excellent results. it is tunable, but i find the default settings work quite well.

if you don't want to use that, or it doesn't work for the problems you're having, check out this fairly useful resource

thanks for the replies and the link. i got new ortofons so the needles aren't a problem anymore. when i recorded that mix i was using two-year old stantons that i used to skratch with as well so i knew i was due for a pair. as far as cleaning records what is recommended. i currently do not clean my records on a consistent basis and i am sure that contributed to some of the skipping if not all. what do you guys think of gruv-glide? should i fork over the cash for that or are there better and more economical ways? what's the best thing to do?

Good question... I've been trying to use all sorts of things to clean the dust frommy vinyls and i end up leaving more dust on it. =P

Cleaning vinyl

I mentioned this before elsewhere but, I like to use dust-off to blow a lot of the large dust particles off my vinyl. It seems to work well. Also, its a good idea to vaccum your tt mats occasionally and also, wash and dry your hands before you mix to keep dirty hippe fingerprints to a minimum.

I think its all about prevention as opposed to restoration.

But I would like to know more about grooveguide...
