Review- Tiesto bill graham 7/28/07

I just got back from what it no doubt one of the best nights of my life. I have been tiesto #1 fan since about 2002, my first real trance experience TE2000 which I had downloaded like the day before I rolled for the first time. I couldn't believe how sick it was and instantly searched out every mix of his I could find. I have been the hugest tiesto fan since, and have seen him probably 7 times now, rubyskye 1015 mezzanine etc. Tonight I went and was loosely with about 12 people split into 3 groups. Anyway out of my main group I was the ONLY one who had seen him live before, I was really hoping they would be blown away. In all my years of listening primarily to EDM, I have NEVER enjoyed a set like this, AND I WAS SOBER! Wtf I only had a few beers, no weed even, I wanted to share the experience with a few people and not let drugs get in the way. There was a time you know when I didn't think I could even go out and have a good time without rolling, but truth is I never even needed it. I can't ever remember him drawing that much energy out of a crowd I mean DAMN. Ok my brain is rattled like hell, I will try and condense a little.

The venue was awesome, very spacious with a PHENOMINAL sound system. I walked around the whole place, tons of places to get beer food etc, very friendly nice environment. I didn't see tons of candy ravers, though I was a little disturbed at how messed up a lot of people there looked but hey, up to a couple years ago THAT WAS ME! Damn did I really look that bad... Anyway, you could actually walk around the dance floor it was crowded in maybe a few spots but I literally covered the area several times without problem, I got tired and went and sat down you usually cannot do either at 1015, you're really lucky to get a chair anywhere at ruby skye. The sound system was a little bass heavy but it wasn't all that bad, I suspect the acoustics in the building just aren't going to be as good as say 1015 as the sound travels much further, but I was still very very happy. It seemed no matter where you went, there were bathrooms water fountains and stands for beer etc. Great great place.

I thought dyloot did a good job opening for tiesto, in all honesty hearing his set makes you APPRECIATE how good tijs really is, dyloot is one of the best but you just cannot compare the two. It really isn't close. That said he was a good opener, he played a few killer tracks and feeling that bass, and hearing everyone talking about tiesto, man I started to get electric. I hadn't seen him in over a year! I was getting pumped up...

AND THEN TIESTO ROCKED THE FUCKING HOUSE DAMN. The last couple times I thought his sets were good, not great as he seems to play a bit slower, trying to give it more of a clubby feel IMO. I used to spend countless hours finding live sets of his and I always felt his open air stuff in like amsterdam and places like that always had more energy, I always thought "man I would kill if I could see him spin at one of those raves." I don't know if it was the new venue or what but he fucking rocked! Hard! Start to finish nearly flawless mixing just building the energy for every song, people were going fucking crazy! I walked around the other rooms and at one point there was ONE person in I think the jungle room, clearly everyone who came tonight was there to see him.

He played silence (first time I've heard him play it sent chills down my spine), a track from parade of athletes, new tracks from his latest album and some sick tech trance near the end. I never fully appreciated his mixing skills till tonight, I was always too fucked up to really pay attention, but I was watching and he's fucking amazing. Just does everything perfect, so fast I can remember trying to be a dj, and just beatmatching is hard! What he does is impossible, I am an even bigger fan.

The girls I went with have never been to anything like this, and they loved it. You just had to be there, the energy, the unity it was just unreal. Only thing I have comparable is a TOOL concert, I've been to 4 including coachella last year and they are similar in a way, though tonight had WAY more energy. In fact the one moment I remember most was actually near the end, he played an older track can't remember the name, and cut the music and acted like he was done. We were all pretty much dead, I mean I could barely stand and he comes out, and starts juicing up the crowd and gets us going for like 20 more minutes! By the end everybody and i mean EVERYBODY there not on too much drugs to notice was exhausted.

For all my TA peeps I hope you had a great night, I didn't recognize anyone (where were ya davet?). I hope to see some galleries up soon, if anyone has any videos that would be awesome, also any chance we can get an mp3 of the set on here? I took a ton of pictures on my phone and some short videos, they aren't all that great though.

One quick thing, I am sure people close to tiesto read this forum and tell him what people think, having been a fan for years and having seen him live at least 6 or 7 times, tonight just blew me away. I went with some people who don't know EDM all that well, and was a little worried they wouldn't have a good time, we all had a GREAT TIME just unreal. Please pass along to him a thank you for an amazing night, I don't think anyone in the world could do better.

I totally agree with you man. I have been listening to tiesto since I was 10 and I went to his concert in hammerstein ballrom and it was my first time seeing him live. It was the greatest night of my life. I already got my ticket for September 1st in NY. I don't even know if its 18+ but I still got it.

What an amazing night guys! I had the time the time of my life. Got to finally meet Blurr , talked to Dave T, kyo and meet some SFTA's. I saw a lot of LATA's that made the trip up.

Just woke up in the hotel and going to head down to fishermans wharf for some food and beer! Tiesto played one of the best sets i've seen from him in a while! Dyloot i think played a perfect opening set to get everyone ready for tiesto! Fantastic vibe last night. Hope everyone that came had a good time!!!

Visuals were cool, couple big screens playing weird shit, few go go dancers some flashy lights. Noticibly absent were lasers of any kind, THAT I miss from 1015. Lasers are cool.

the only reason there weren't any lasers is because tiesto doesn't like them. the lovefest afterparty visuals will for sure blow last night out the water. i wasn't gonna go anywhere last night after the giants game finished, in fact i made it all the way home to milpitas at 11, but i got a bunch of txts from everyone telling me to go so i turned around and went for it. i'm not a tiesto fan and never have been aside from a few of his old productions and of course the trance energy 2k set. i've seen tiesto once before at his last ruby skye gig on a friday and his tl bored the hell out of me, his mixing made me want to vomit. very disappointing. i went in last night pretty much to check out the production, mingle and hang out in the house and breaks room for a bit, but i ended up in the main room for most of the night. i do have to admit tiesto's mixing was 1000% better than the last time. it probably had a lot to do with the fact that he was isolated on that stage with no groupies behind him propositioning him all night. i think he still has it in him when he's 100% focused. while nothing i heard really moved me, i enjoyed at least half his set from when i got there (12:30) to when i left (2:45). i also enjoyed the strong ass drinks the bartenders made, without which i probably would have passed out from exhaustion. the crowd was also a marked improvement from past skills raves. i headed over to 1015 after bill graham, but the line there was so long i was ready to fall asleep just standing in it. so alas i broke off from the group and went home this weekend has been sooo long, wow.

I'll go on a limb and say I thought Gil La's set was better than Dyloot's. But, Dyloot mixed it up a bit more which probably was a better lead into Tiesto. Hard to say what Gil La's set would have been like if he we swapped with Dyloot.

Tiesto started off real strong, then lost it a bit with Imogen Heap and it was just a solid set for the first 90 minutes. Nothing special His mixing was actually on-point (as in, his beats were matched up :-p), nonetheless some of his transitions sounded completely wonky and just weird in some cases and didn't sound right. But it was just a few of them and for the most part other than ONE of them, nothing ot gripe about.

THen something happened. Right around 1:30am I hear this so familiar of a track starting to come in. From there I see Tiesto and (guessing his manager?) leave the decks using a flash light to go use the bathroom...about three seconds later, I'm like GOURYELLA - GOURYELLA!! Then I was like, "How can Tiesto go use the bathroom during Gouryella!?!?!" hehehe....TIest comes back about half through the track, and i'm "Gouryella!" and he's like "YEAH!!!" while making this tough man expression with his arms or something. lol. it was funny. From that point on, for the most part, I was like "This is the Tiesto I remember!" -- It was the best period of music I've heard from Tiesto in person since probably 2002 or 2003. I really enjoyed it. I went outside at like 2:30 just to get a breather but the music was so loud you could enjoy it from out there.

Then he played his remix of He's a Pirate.....which was a total WTF moment, lol.

To beat the rush out, we left at like 2:45-2:50. While trying to get a cab, I realized I left my jacket inside behind a couch and went in to get it and holy crap Tiesto was playing real hard and real fast in there. It was extreme!

Saw some asian guy try to slip in the doors at the end and the lady security person was tackling the crap out of him. She got help quickly, but man that guy must have felt embarrased to get tackled by the little lady, lol.

When I left, I realized just how tired I was and how stiff my back was and was just like it's time to go home.

I thought the production of the main room was solid. No lasers, but to my understanding that was a request from Tiesto and it was honored. But man I love strobe lights and there were tons of them!! I thought the lighitng was good overall, no complaints there.

THe sound in the place was LOUUUUDD when Tiesto got on. But it was so gooood, considering the type of event it was. It was nice, crisp and clear. A rarity for a system brought in like that. Whoever tuned the system did a damn good job and deserves a bonus.
