drum loops

I've read the production master list tutorial here, found an interesting article from tweak... also have read Rick Snoman's Dance Music Manual, tho his drum loop is ubersimplistic and not very interesting...

Just curious how you go about loop making? The loop I've made is a rather simple, like Rick's (tho I put a delay on the claps which creates a nice rhythmic effect)... I just thought one up and laid down the pattern, but I imagine having one that evolves over time might be more interesting...

How do you go about making yours?

I just start stacking pieces until it sounds like I want it to.
My usual process is:

1. Get the Bass Drum and Bass line working together
2. Get some Hats in there (closed & open)
3. Add the snare or clap (or both).
4. add additional percussion if necessary.
5. Sometimes add a sampled loop or pieces from a sampled loop underneath to give it some "grit" or "human feel"

Not always in that order, but thats a general workflow.

ok, so u dont do anything particularly fancy then? You just get that one loop done and thats it for the entire track?

I thought the suggestion made by Tweak might be interesting... tho he was talking about pop music... make 1 loop lasting one bar, double the size, make a SLIGHT alteration to bar 2, double that to get 4, make a slight alteration to bar 4, double it to 8, etc etc.

Also, particularly when I listen to prog trance, and I probably should have been taking notes, is that the drum loops are a tad bit more complicated, both in how they are at any given moment and in the way they change over time... I'll have to find an example later.

When in doubt, add another layer. That's how I do 'em.
