From Rick Snowman's "Dance Music Manual"...
"Most usually, small amounts of positive pitch modulation are applied to force the pitch downwards as it plays, but some house tracks will employ a negative envelope to create a snare that exhibits a sucking nature, resulting in a thwacking sound."
I've also heard this sound in a number of trance tracks... I'm listening through some now and if I find an example i'll post it.
edit: A lot of ferry corsten's productions kinda have what I'm looking for...
I think I'm gonna have to end up synthesizing these from scratch in order to get the pitch to work out as such... I doubt I could do this with samples...
But yea any ideas?

Layer a few clap samples, one a thuddy low one and one with a clicky sound. Turn off quantization and move the clicky one slightly before the low one and then compress the hell out of it. High ratio, low threshold, short attack and slightly longer release.

Layer a couple of snares, boost the right frequencies, a little bit of saturation and maybe some parallel compression...
Personally I dont like laying with claps as the multiple attacks on a clap make the snares attack sound a bit 'crunchy' and, personally, I think it lessons the 'snap' of the snare. I sometimes layer with a rimshot though for a nice wooden-sounding 'thwack'...
