i don't know about the other settings as i don't have a dslr, but i know that having the exposure compensation at -0.7 will only make picutres darker than they really should. that's one of the reasons they look so dark.

Footwork ain't the greatest place to take shots either, and hell, I try; I'm kinda learning my way to photography in poorly lit places; I don't wanna use too much flash to the extend where people close their eyes in shots; I'm sure I could use all of your wonderful advices.

I posted them for the sake of those who wanted them.

Thanks for all the love.

the main problem here is really composition. try filling more of the frame with your subjects. and the fact that the place is so empty doesnt help either.

its not a matter of using too much flash. you need flash in a club. i even have my FEV set to +2/3. do not use Av (aperture priority) mode because your shutter will be open for too long and cause blur in your subjects. play around with full manual mode. it will be a bitch to learn at first when you are getting use to various lighting conditions but you will be glad that you did.

ps. avoid crowd shots if a venue isnt very busy. justin chung should take this advice as well.

pps. you're using a nikon d40. ewwww

FW was ridiculously empty that night but thanks for the suggestion. Truth of the matter is that I have a crappy 18-55 mm lens, f3.5 that's not very practical with what I really want to get in clubs, I always have to focus manually with this lens. the 50 mm f1.4 won't help me much either because its manual.

A good and logical upgrade would be a 28-70mm f/2.8D like this one here, wider lens=more light gets in (77mm vs 52mm ), so I can make out things better instead of just guessing at it.

I'll get that when I finally have more time (other than once a week) to dedicate myself to photography and learning how to get shoot from the best angle with the perfect timing to get the best of things happening at these great events/venues.

You're right, just got home from work and checked the settings on it as I left them, compensation was low; I had done some nature shots the week before where I wanted to darken my shots a bit. I forgot about it and nor did it cross my mind to look into it that night, I guess that's where the actual experience kicks in.

Re: the usage of the flash

I used one, not the built-in; one that I have purchased earlier in the day because I knew how terrible is to take pictures at that place and I really wanted to go to this event. I should've gone through the booklet that came with it quickly to figure out how to work with it to improve the lighting.

your advice/feedback is kindly appreciated, I admit that this is not the best of my photography as I don't usually take shots in dark places but I'm open to suggestions.
