my friend that i make music with sometimes just got one of these desks used, but it only came with 1 of the swing out speakers stand things.
I notice a lot of you guys are using this desk, and I was wondering how you find those speaker stands.
I don't know much about acoustics and things, but it seems to me that with monitors on these stands, and with with them pointed inward, the sound is too exaggerated stereo...like making music with headphones, or monitoring with a dj style monitor setup.
I think a better solution would be to just put the monitors on the upper shelf of the desk (the one with your computer screens(s)) and turn them inwards slightly.
anybody have an opinion on whether or not this is a better solution than using the speaker stands? or would this monitor placement atleast be acceptable? It sounds alright to me, but i also know you want your speakers a certain distance apart to prevent frequency cancelling or something?
They are just 5" krk monitors, and with them set up on the shelf, they are an arms length away from the sitter, and 3 feet apart from eachother (measuring from the centre of both woofer cones.

You won't get good speaker positioning with Ikea Jerkers. Ever.
You should aim to have a 3-5 foot equilateral triangle between you and your speakers. Obviously you can't achieve an equilateral triangle with the swing out speaker stands, because the speakers will be much further apart than you are to them. Furthermore, putting the monitors on your desk top or the shelf will not have them far enough apart. You would be lucky to get them 2 feet apart. Finally, buying speaker stands is fruitless, because the metal poles on the left and right of the desk will get in the way and cause comb filtering.
Time to buy a new desk, or cut off those poles.
Ninja edit: I guess 3 feet IS doable with small monitors like the RP5! 6" or 8" woofers, and you're not going anywhere.

yeah they are 3 feet apart for sure, so should be alright for the time being. we obviously arent going to be doing any major mastering or anything with these monitors anyways.
just wanted to confirm that with the swivel stands, they are infact too far apart, and put a hole in the stereo image I guess, because he thought this would be ideal...but hes a headphones lover anyways.

You might like to consider stacking your computer monitors one above the other (this is what I've done). It will always be a bit of a struggle getting your speakers positioned properly when they're so wide.
Rather than buying a new desk, you could cut the bars off with a grinder and use speaker stands instead.

just for anybody else who maybe are considering this desk or something, just thought id let you know that the platform is 4 feet long, and can comfortably fit 2 17" LCD screens, and these krk5 monitors on it.
