Ex-General: Iraq `nightmare' for US

I don't know how much longer bush supporters are going to keep denying the truth. We have generals now calling the war a disaster. I can't wait until the day those responsible for the blunder get their justice, if that day ever comes..

Ex-General: Iraq `nightmare' for US

ARLINGTON, Va. (AP) — The U.S. mission in Iraq is a "nightmare with no end in sight" because of political misjudgments after the fall of Saddam Hussein and that continue today, a former chief of U.S.-led forces said Friday.

Retired Lt. Gen. Ricardo Sanchez, who commanded coalition troops for a year beginning June 2003, cast a wide net of blame for both political and military shortcomings in Iraq that helped open the way for the insurgency — such as disbanding the Saddam-era military and failing to cement ties with tribal leaders and quickly establish civilian government after Saddam was toppled.

He called current strategies — including the deployment of 30,000 additional forces earlier this year — a "desperate attempt" to make up for years of misguided policies in Iraq.

"There is no question that America is living a nightmare with no end in sight," Sanchez told a group of journalists covering military affairs.

Sanchez avoided pointing his criticism at any single official or agency, but it appeared a broad indictment of White House policies and a lack of leadership in the Pentagon to oppose them. Such assessments — even by former Pentagon brass — are not new, but they have added resonance as debates over war strategy dominate the presidential campaign.

Sanchez went on to offer a pessimistic view on the current U.S. strategy against extremists will make lasting gains, but said a full-scale withdrawal also was not an option.

"The American military finds itself in an intractable situation ... America has no choice but to continue our efforts in Iraq," said Sanchez, who works as a consultant training U.S. generals.

Sadam already got his so those responsible for their blunder got their justice.
As for you, why don't you move in with your Hezbollah friends. You criticize the government and politicians all the time, yet I think they're all more capable to run this country then you are.
Again, please feel free to take your libertarian views, supposed constitution followings, and hatred for the government, elsewhere.

Hmmm, that doesn't seem to say much in regards to this general who once held Petraeus' top spot in Iraq. One would certainly think he might know a bit more what he's talking about.

Hardly the same could be said about your, uhh, interesting comments.

I'm sure he's right on top of that, as soon as you enlist and join the cause that you apparently love and support behind your keyboard so fervently.

The large majority of Americans and the majority of the world tends to disagree with your sentiments. Funny that.

Feel free to take your ass up and move elsewhere yourself. This forum is ripe with criticism, and it's welcome on any side of the aisle and with any point of view so long as it's supported (or at least an attempt at support is made). This general demonstrates the growing sentiment by those who've served in the Pentagon, served in Iraq and under this Administration on how much of a debacle the entire war and how it's run has truly become. He's not alone:

I'm not the one who has a problem with Republicans and Democrats. Some of you guys do.
Again, for those of you who aren't happy with the way the US handles itself on the world stage you're welcomed to move elsewhere.
Don't forget to let the door hit ya on the way out

With the ones I disagree with, of course I do. Your point?

Hmmm, I guess we should just forget about that silly Constitutional right thingy to vote in people whom we agree with then?

And when our elected political leaders do something we disagree with, we have no responsibility to tell them that?

Boy you really oughta brush up on your U.S. Government 101 knowledge. If you think our elected representatives who hold a public office (i.e. we are their bosses) are not subjected to criticism by those who elected them, I believe there's a few totalitarian-type governments around the world where YOU might feel a little more cozy with.

Criticism is one thing. Some of you have gigantic conspiracy theory complexes where everyone in the government is to blame, and only you and a few others know the "truth".

Well my tin foil hat works pretty good at times, and I know there's others here that have fancier hats than mine. I'm not so sure if Krypton's hat is one of them, but in regards to this particular thread topic it doesn't take a conspiracy tin foiler to understand the rightful criticisms of our Administration's war policies from a former general who once oversaw the war.

Your Pavlovian conditioning is supposed to be working right now, Opus.

Just admit it already, Big Brother loves us and he's been stealing our Civil Liberties in the middle of the night because he cares about the welfare of all humanity. Just forget about all of those tens of thousands of dead children that have been a part of the collateral damage in Iraq, they probably would have grown up to be Freedom hating terrorists anyway.

LOL.. Sorry, but you're a little too newb to be telling me to go somewhere else..

Who gave Saddam his WMDs? The West! I'm trying to reform this country, not join a foreign resistance group you dimwit.

You know, there's this one Hitler quote, "How fortunate for governments that the people they administer don't think."

Start thinking, stop trusting everything the government does. We are not answerable to the government, the government is supposed to be answerable to us.

Ben Franklin said this, "Those who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety."

Clearly, we the people have a duty to be skeptical of the government at ALL times, lest they take power while the people aren't looking. Stop looking the other way. If something is wrong, we should fix it. Not keep the beast churning despite all the crap that comes from its mouth.

Some of us are definitely more awake than others but I think that society as a whole is quickly catching on. I don't think it has to do with any sort of complex. I think it's more to do with intellectual curiosity and wanting to know how everything works and why the world is always so f***ed up all of the time. You have to question EVERYTHING in order to understand how this world works and that's what some of us have been doing for a while now.
