Of the 'older' variety.

Could you guys recommend, and/or link me to some really good sets?

It's something I would like to explore a little.

Dig that one up somewhere. It's a good introduction, I'd say.

Just search some sets by Carl Craig, Juan Atkins, the older Richie Hawtin and Plastikman sets, and you should get good results !

And don't forget Derrick May. He's still playing very good detroit techno and house and his sets rock.

Maybe the exploring is done with, but I tought of throwing some recommendations...

Not sure of what you mean by older though

For compilation mixes I see two excellent titles.

Timeless
A mix compilation of Metroplex (Juan Atkins's label) classics: the tracklist is simply put, perfect (or as close as). I think it pans from 85 to 95 and it has most of the great classics (Except for the tracks released on the Clear Album, we'll get to that...)

http://www.discogs.com/release/92745

KMS Definitive Mix
Basically the same drill as above for the KMS label of Kevin Saunderson. Probably not as definitive as Timeless, because there were -If I am correct- much more releases there, yet this Mix is very good because it is quite eclectic (Timeless is very cohesive), so you have a rather wide panel of the production. Saunderson has always been the most dancefloor-oriented of the Belleville bunch, so it evens gets very housey at some points.

Unfortunately there is no such release for the Derrick May label Transmat, and I believe the best that comes close is this.

Innovator

http://www.discogs.com/release/27136

A few years back it was not the easiest CD to track down though. Basically a compilation of all the essential works of Derrick May. Unfortunately, I seem to remember the tracklist was not completely accurate... moreover, some edits are weird too but there's nothing else you can get your hands on really.

And a couple last additions:

Clear

http://www.discogs.com/release/56673

You can't get older than that I think. The Clear re-release dates from 90, but the tracks are from 81 and onwards. Alleys of your Mind, Clear, Cosmic Cars... The album is somewhat funny as it's even New Wave at a point (Industrial Lies), but it's the classic of classics.

Elements
Another compilation, of Carl Craig's early work when he was the protegé of Derrick May. Definitely not his best work, but still very interesting. 89-90 stuff, still sounds very "electro".

http://www.discogs.com/release/9939

I would have some more, but I thinks it is lenghty enough.
(Also interested in what you think of what you heard.)
