Learn your production environment. (Software, Hardware, Synths and plugins)
Best way to do this, if you are using "software" is to import an existing midi into your environment.
This should help you in understanding the different parts of an existing track that you are already familiar with
Next try to create a bass line a synth lead or a drum track. Just remember learn one at a time a common mistake is when you try to write a hit the first time you sit in front of a synth or your computer.
Once you have created a "part" try to use different instruments on the play back
Now you are ready to change wave patterns and effects this should give you a start in manipulating the sound
Remember you will never be great at all aspects of music production
For example you may find yourself asking people for tips on bass lines or vocals and in my case mastering
