Taking the "Club Mixer" Out

Hey guys!

I will be moving soon and leaving my Dj gear behind to my roommate.

I am going to need something for a small apartment and strictly for home PC/Laptop

Before I go on and on my general question is "Can I get away with using an External sound card,Studio Monitors, Traktor 3/Torq"

I want to fully take a mixer out of the equation. I know very little about external sound cards so before I blow +$200.00 bucks I want/need something that will Support

Traktor 3/Torq

M-Audio Pro Audio Studiophile AV-40 (Monitor Speakers)

BCD3000 or BCD2000

What sound card can support all three ITEMS?

if you're using torq, you wouldn't need a sound card because you can use the connectiv

When I got the X-session pro I was given Torq for free. I do not have the entire setup though e.g. The connective

You could take a mixer out of the equation completely, but I would want some sort of tactile control over mixer-like functions (eg. MIDI controller). Keyboard and mouse just aren't the same, but you could get away with it.

You would be able to get away with using software mixing, although you would probably want at least 2 outputs, one for main and one for cue.

if your studio monitor only connects through xlr, then the fasttrack pro is not for you.

Check the official Traktor forums to see what they're using. They have some threads on the Behringer controllers.
http://www.native-instruments.com/f...splay.php?f=105

I use a Echo Indigo DJ sound card, plugs into pcmcia cardbus port, 2 unbalanced stereo outputs can drive an external amplifier or monitors and provide a headpone output if you use the internal mixer. Or you can use Traktor in "external mixer" mode and drive 2 channels of a regular mixer. Although the Indigo has unbalanced outputs on a 1/8" to RCA cable, you can use an RCA to XLR adapter to connect to pro gear, works fine as long as the cable is under 20 feet or so and there's not a lot of electrical-equipment noise nearby. You could probably use an RCA to XLR adapter for just about any other audio card that only has RCA outputs, or there is a device called a "DI Box".

I use an M-Audio X-Session midi controller to give me conventional knobs to control the Traktor internal mixer EQ knobs, levels, etc. MUCH better than using a mouse for everything.

This is getting to be an old setup but it still works fine for me, and everything is small so it fits on a special litte DJ table about 2x2' and everything fits in a laptop bag when I take it to parties (have used it in a few clubs too).

New laptops don't have the pcmcia cardbus port anymore - some have the new version called Expressbus. No affordable audio cards for Expressbus yet, so for best audio it's Firewire or USB devices (I guess they're not really "sound cards" anymore)

I'm starting to noticing more people mentioning they use one of the Echo fireware audio devices
http://www.echoaudio.com/Products/FireWire/
or a Native Instruments USB audio device such as the Audio 8 DJ or Audio Kontrol 1
http://www.native-instruments.com/index.php?id=djline

Here is a midi controller "boxing match" between Vestax VCI-100 (this might be the current best T3 controller), vs the M-Audio Xponent:

Nice review link.

If you are going the Torq route, then the Xponent has everything you need in one package. It includes your audio interface (so you don't need the Conectiv), Torq, and the MIDI controller all premapped out for you. Plug and play.

If you are going the Traktor route, look at Native Instruments Audio8 DJ soundcard. It's the same unit provided with the Traktor Scratch package (their digital vinyl package), but it's available separately for other uses. Has 8 ins, 8 outs, mic input, headphone pre-amp, perfect for DJ use.

Actually right now if you purchase Traktor Scratch (even though you don't want decks and a DVS), you get the full version of Traktor 3.3 for free (until Dec 31st). So you'd have a great soundcard, Traktor 3.3, and DVS support if you ever needed it for about $500 USD... which is what the Audio8 DJ + Traktor 3.3 would cost you anyway, and you get DVS support for free.

For MIDI control, the Behringer is apparently on the cheapo side. The Vestax VCI-100 is very nice, but of course this whole setup will cost around $1000 + laptop, but it's more "pro" than the Xponent I would say and opens you up to using different software and hardware options in the future.
