New to Techno/Trance - Need Suggestions!

I never listened to music much till 1.5 years ago, started out with (c)rap, but I'm sick of it now and it seems I'm leaning a lot more towards electronica. I need some advice & hopefully this isn't too logn of a read (skim if you have to).

Here are some of my favorite artists/songs far are . . .

  • Benny Benassi: Satisfaction, Change Style, Get Loose, J'ai pas 20 ans remix (Alizee), Put your Hands up for Detroit
  • Darude: Bad. Stars, Sandstorm, Burning, Feel the Beat, Let Music Take control, The Flow, Bitter Sweet
  • Paul van Dyke (various mixes)
  • Airhead: Vortex A1, Thrillseekers: Dreaming of You, Armin van Buuren: Janeiro (and a bunch of other ones from the TA New Tracks Section)

One of my friends gave me a link to an electronic music guide & I scrubbed through it finding stuff I like/hate/etc. He also said to take this list & the samples with a grain of salt. I put numbers on top of the list . . .

Click HERE for Color Coded (a.k.a. "Ishkur's Guide to Electronic Music (GryphonAuto's acid remix)")

House:

  • House Anthem: Nice energy, good flow, lots of variation in tone/sound.
  • Techno Dance: Very Energetic, stuff you can dance to
  • Hip House: Kind of cheezy in a good way, kind of cool, very energetic
  • Funky House: Not sure I like most of the music itself, but love the funky sounds.
  • Acid House: I love the crazy sounds!

Trance:

  • Psychedelic Trance: Nice energetic trance-like flow with cool trippy sounds (Similarly GOA and Dark)
  • Epic & Anthem Trance: Lots of variation in sound/tone, nice sounds, moderate energy, stuff I can listen to for a while without getting a headache, nice progression (Similarly Classic, Break, Deep, Tech, and Dutch Trance)
  • German Trance: Fun music
  • Acid Trance: Lost of energy and crazy/fun sounds!

Techno:

  • Hard Acid Techno: Super-energetic (not in the pounding headache way), cool sound, good variation
  • Detroit Classic/Techno/House Some interesting stuff

Breakbeat: (note: I'm sick of the lyrics in most of this genre)

  • Electro: Who doesn't love robo and electro sounds put to a good beat?
  • ElectroFunk: I'm a sucker for the funk undertones
  • Turntablism/Scratching LOVE it when done right; HATE 95% of the stuff I hear on the radio or at clubs, sounds like the stereosystem is broken . . . and I'm in DETROIT for the love of god!
  • Acid & Chemical Breaks Cool electric, slightly funky sounds . . . just love it! Music has nice audio variation.
  • Miami Bass Total cheezy fun, and lot of it!
  • Funky Breaks / Big Beat Cool sound, wouldn't mind it mixed into other genres
  • Anthem Breaks Sounds more like trance to me, but it has some good stuff going on.
  • Hip-Hop/Progressive Hop/Dirty South Rap/Crunk: Some of the musical stuff is REALLY cool, but then it gets ruined by the lyrics, seriously, SHUT UP ALREADY!

Jungle:

  • NeuroFunk I'm a sucker for crazy/trippy sounds used well!
  • Trancestep Fun stuff, a bit crazy for me to listen to all the time though
  • Rave: I love the stadium-like full sound. It also has some nice audio variation & tons of energy! The rest of hardcore (on that site at least) has little-to-no variation at all, like a broken record, gives me a headache!

I guess I'm really picky when it comes to music I suppose, deleting about 90% of the music I ever listen to & I'm tired of listening to random tracks hoping I find good techno. So basically energetic, cool sounds, nice variation (no broken-record), some dance (techno) & some mellow (trance), minimal vocals. So anyone have some awesome music they think I'll love?

ha ha ha, sorry about that! I was just utilizing my cheezy photoshopping skills to make it easier to find what I rated what. It's a great guide! I sent the modified list to rehab (fixed the original post) That guide rules! Thanks for making it!

In case you've not found it yet: www.discogs.com

I wish someone had pointed me to this site when I first got into trance. It's a great way to discover artists' aliases and thus a ton of new material.

PERVADING CALL - DESTINY - 2/5 Not bad, but too sleepy
Baced VS Ace Delight - Witness - 2.5/5 Some nice stuff going on, but it's not quite there & the slow section is a little much for me.
Ace Da Brain - Magic Waters. 2/5 Nice, but too mellow
Rapid Eye - Circa Forever (RE Remix): 3/5 Have it, great track, except takes TOOOOOOO long to build.
Also: Altitude - Altitude (SHOKK Remix) 2/5 It gets good later, but the song changes waaaaaaayyy to slow (sorry I probably have ADD).
Rank 1 - Airwave 3/5 A little slow for my tastes, but well done enough to add to my collection (quality surpasses genre) P.S. Listen to it while watching this guy -->
Vengaboys - Kiss (Airscape Remix): 3/5 nice full sound

I do what I can! After going through top-100 albums to only find 3 songs that rate 3/5 & deleting 90% of the rest . . . lol.

Eat Static - Primitive Earthlings 2/5 - Too raw
The Muses Rapt - Spiritual Healing 3/5 - Enjoyable, but it feels like it's missing something.
Vibrasphere - Manzanilla 2/5 - Interesting, but toooo minimal for my tastes
Pleiadians - Electra 4.5/5 - I like the rave-like filter, the "effect sounds" enhance the music, great energy, tons of variation throughout the entire piece! (Does this mean I'm psychotic?) The only thing I would do is a little more variety in the "drums" (less hardstyle), but awesome piece! You have any more of this? Must have! *spazzes out from withdraws*
Logic Bomb - High Density 4/5 - Great stuff! I feel like I'm missing a lot because of the youtube quality & massive use of bass.

http://www.discogs.com/release/9388 This is where the Pleiadians track is from, and the album sounds very much like that one track. You can find all the tracks on youtube aswell I think. It's hard to get a hold of though, but I think you can get it on beatport.

Also try getting a hold of the 2 hallucinogen albums, Twisted and The Lone Deranger. They're regarded as some of the best goa/psy albums.

http://youtube.com/watch?v=k00Zrc2iXUM&feature=related

Astral Projection is ofcourse also worth checking out if you like that sound. I like the 2 first albums the most.

Man With No Name
http://youtube.com/watch?v=Zut-ulgs6rY

X-Dream their albums Radio and We Created Our Own Happiness are worth checking out.

This is all pretty much the goa stuff that everyone has heard, and are regarded as classics. But if you like that stuff, just go from there.

You can also use this thread. I like listening to sets instead of individual tracks when searching for music. There's some great sets in there, I don't know if they're all working now though.

You should really try getting the Paul Oakenfold essential mix from 1994, and all his mixes from 1999. I'm sure there is something you will like.

Check out the DJ Promotion section, just download something and listen to it, there's usually always a tracklist aswell, so you can see what tracks you like and search for more.

I really don't like so many sub-genres. It makes sorting my music very difficult. Right now I have everything in Trance, House, Techno, and Progressive Trance, and Dark Trance.
