A have a few questions.
I have only done mixes on my computer, and im planning on switching to real thing...the wheels of steel.
So I need a lot of advice.
First of all, I live in New York, does anyone know any record shops that could get me started off. Because I have many great songs that may not even be hot in clubs right now, but im sure if they were played, they might become anthems. So I really need a record shop that is going to have a huge variety.
Secondly I have done a few mixes on my computer and have put them on cd....should I start selling these mixes to whoever possible(is it even legal), or should I just give out these mixes and hope they end up in the right place.
Thirdly, please explain to me, how I would get gigs. Should I hand out business cards, and if yes, then to who?
Thanx for the advice

1. DOn't live in New york do I can't help ya there.

2. What programs did you use to mix? Are you mixing MP3's or are you actually making the mixes live!

3. YOu start out with a Mix tape or CD that you give to Owners/head DJ's or promotors. It's all about your demo tape or CD. Usally if your just startin out you will probably have an audition just to see if you can do it live I would start mixing for at least a couple months on the Turntables before you go out selling your self, worst thing you can do is go out and perform like shit, your local scene won't forget that

two things

* be really REALLY good. There is about a bazillion DJs trying to make a break right now so if you want to get noticed you have to be very VERY good at what you do AND you have to play something unique and original. Everybody can take a bunch of anthems, bang them out and get the crowd going - BUT that's usually not what the clubs / promoters are looking for.

AND

* know people ! You can be the best damn DJ in the world but if you don't know the right people you won't get too far. Go to clubs often, talk to the DJs and other regulars, find out who's the owner or who is booking the DJs, talk to them. Get your name out, get people to know you - play house parties, maybe throw your own small rave. Make a good tape / CD and give it out to people, include your contact info on each and every disc - you never know who might hear it.

peace
