New DJ!

So I recently fell in love with trance/electronica. WHY DID I LISTEN TO RAP/ROCK FOR SO LONG?!!!! Anyways I wanted to try mixing my own sets, which is how I decided I wanted to learn a bit about DJing.

Anyways, before I bought any gear I wanted to make sure it was worth it so I downloaded some program called VirtualDJ, here's a screencap.
http://img509.**************/img509/...irtualdjbp3.jpg

YEah it's a joke of a program, but I'm beatmatching mp3's using the pitchsliders. I have to avoid looking at the soundwaves up top, also if I press sync it beatmatches it for me, so I have to avoid giving into those temptations and just use my ears. Anyway I just love when I get it prepped right in the headphones and it comes out good on the speakers, I really want to take this further.

What's the next step for me?
And is there anything you wish you'd done or known alot earlier in your journey as a DJ?

Re: New DJ!

Cheapest solution would be to buy a controller. A piece of gear which allows you to mix on the computer as if you where using real cd players. You can mix, cue and play like the real thing

There are a lot of options and honestly I don't know any of them. But it could be of interest for you .

I agree with them. Buy a controller. It makes recording sets much easier and more fun. I am using an xsession pro from M-Audio. Its simple and cheap. Good for beginners. Its really all i need and its only $99.

What software would you recommend somebody to get(that works with such a controller). I'm pretty technologically adept, but if it's too complicated I just get really frustrated. I taught myself PhotoshopCS2 and I'm damn good with it, just for refrence.

my first recommendation is to get 'better off alone' off your track list.

I personally don't like virtual DJ. I use Traktor. It works with my controller and setting up the controller with Traktor isn't to bad. Traktor is a pretty basic program with a really good interface.

Its bad, and it was popular about 10 years ago if i am correct. Some rapper on the radio made a rap remix with better off alone. Sounded like shit. Like Tintin said, www.beatport.com is deff the way to go. You will eventually develope a good ear for which tracks are good and which ones flow well together in a set. Its basically your own opinion of what sounds good to you.
(Except better off alone, its in the past and lets leave it that way)
