Radar Detectors - do they work?

Does anybody have any experience with radar detectors used to give advanced warning of police radar and laser traps?

How well do they work? Can you recommend any particular ones/brand?

I know they are illegal in Ontario, but in Alberta, where I am, they are legal. I got a $299 speeding ticket, and I'd like to avoid it next time.

Which brings me to another question. Whats the best way to bring down your ticket in court? I'm sure people here have had experience with that.

Don't know much about them, but here's what you do.

If you get caught with a Radar detector, they confiscate it and I believe you get a fine. Or sometimes they make you drive over it, which sucks lol.
And it definitely would suck if you spent $1,000+ on a decent one.

If you are spending lots of money on a radar detector, make sure you buy a cheap one for like $50 and always keep that in the car somewhere.

If you have a radar detector, and get caught, make sure you take your expensive one and switch it for the cheap one before the cop gets to your car. That way, if they do confiscate your radar, they'll take/destroy the cheap one, and you'll still have your expensive one for future use.

Even better than a radar detector is actually paying attention to the road. You can go pretty fast before getting pulled over, but if you really have to drive faster than that, at least make sure there are no cops around, doofus.

technically, by the time you see a cop then they already have you clocked on their radar so it does help to have a detector. i would like to get one even though i only drive 120km/h at the most on the highway.

for the most part they work, however they false alarm so often that you basically are driving paranoid....but for long runs on highway stretches they are wonderful, free driving, void of quota coppers dinging you for doing a perfectly normal rate of speed.

I never got a ticket the entire time that I had one (3 years) You will find that it alerts you most of the time, you generally get enough distance that you can brake and slow down. As for the LIDAR detector built inside....useless and redundant. If the LIDAR hits the detector then you are nabbed, and its ticket time that is how LIDAR works...think LAZER QUEST.

As for it being illegal I had friends who were caught with theirs and essentially the cops threatened them then slapped down other fines, confiscated the detector but never charged them with the detector fine. In one instance the cop smashed it right on the side of the QEW.

I dunno about the "doofus" comment considering police specifically hideaway in places so that they are undetected which yields them the maximum amount of violations. It is their job to nab you. in most highways you move as the traffic moves and depending on the time of the day/date/weather the average speed on the highways can run as high as 120. Making everyone a "doofus".

diginut is right, i would even add (well its true here anyways), that everytime i slammed the brake when seeing the cops while speeding i got away with it... does this mean, the cop see you're paying attention and let you go? maybe.

And when speeding, i'm talking 140kmh and over.

if you can't accept the punishment then don't do the crime.....seriously....I hate people that can't accept their punishment when they know they were in the wrong.

well, i was doing 170 on the 407 a few years ago. there was an OPP sitting on an onramp. i saw behind and slowed down significantly before i actually passed him but he still clocked me at 170.... but he let me off without a ticket.
