The 'Progressive' evolution... finally some music talk?
About a month ago, there was a thread posted (here) that was in regards to the resurection of progressive. I may have made a smart ass remark in that thread, but I chose not to expand my thoughts in that thread because I think there is a larger issue at hand than 'progressive' coming back in to trend (which I still believe it isn't).
To my understanding, progressive, is always refered to in the 4/4 community as stuff that DJ's like Sasha, Digweed, Warren etc played from the mid 90's to approx 2004. It was evident that due to the amount of diversity in the sets that it could not be summarized as just house, just trance, just tribal... but it maintained a very similar tempo. These were really good times. I wish it could come back, but I'm also realistic.
From around 2003-2005, alot of DJ's mentioned above slowly changed their DJing directions into lower tempo's and only played sets that were from 1 or 2 subgenres... minimal and techhouse. I realize that not every single set from those same DJ's play exclusively tracks from those subgenre's, but nobody is fooled when you say they play the same stuff today as they did back then. Alot of people love to hear this type of music and this is in no way a critique of your musical tastes.
This brings me to the real point and in some way relates to what I would have said in that previous thread...what happened to the people who didn't catch onto the minimal/tech trend? Did they start listening to dubstep? The answer is no, but the genre of progressive has definetely evolved IMO, trendy today or not. There are lots of DJ's/producers that have made great strides in the past couple of years attempting to ressurect those great feelings in a very intellegent, interesting way. They incorporate elements of tribal, vocal house, driving trance, even hints of psy... but always dark and never a dull moment.
Proof you say? Well, I'd like everyone who thinks I'm full of shit or wants a clearer idea of what I'm trying to say to listen to this set. [[ LINK REMOVED ]]
These are 3 guys from Argentina (Kintar & Rex, Maindave) who have had their radio show on frisky radio for some time now. They spin a blend of about 4 subgenres of house & trance, but it always has a progressive feel to it. It's what I'd want as a fan to hear Digweed, Seaman, Sasha etc play today if they had not gone in the direction they did. Wishful thinking for sure, but everyone is entitled to their own opinion.
Lastely, I'd like to say that this thread is an excuse to get some discussion goingon music. I know alot of people browse these forums without posting because of some of the stupid shit that is posted, but I encourage you to speak up on this subject or just anything at all. I also want to say that my understanding of things may not necessarily be fact, so if you want to be a smart ass and bring in wikipedia definitions etc... don't bother, you win.
